Vocalist, I see you unfailingly comment about every song list posted here. Quite honestly, it perplexes me as to what can you make of the quality of music from a mere list? I have found the concert lists of many yesteryear musicians lacking in planning (from an ideal point of view of raga and tala contrast), but the music was of a high order. The other side is that many of today's artistes come up with perfect lists, but oftentimes the music is not even average.

Sorry to continue this digression from the thread, but I have to second sangeetarasikan on this ... Not only does Vocalist comment on almost EVERY concert listing without having any idea about the quality of the actual concert, I have noticed that a few tamil compositions in a list is sure to elicit a favorable response from him/her. Also, he/she just randomly comments "Nice list" without any justification/reasoning to the point that it has become quite annoying.

Precisely where have I commented that the quality of music of Sangeetha Sivakumar is in any way good? Do you find that this list (in terms of a repertoire) is "not nice"? The way people accuse others of "assuming" or "having no idea", is annoying, considering they're guilty of the same.

Probably of the digressing remarks or comments, sangeetarasikan actually does raise a worthwhile point, unlike the other two. "the music was of a high order" for yesteryear musicians, however, depending on who it was, it could lack variety and become incredibly boring or clinical - what some people think of Sudha Ragunathan's or Santhanam's. Also, there's a huge assumption, considering there's no sure way of knowing whether an artist planned a kutcheri list or not...as minor variations, like song requests before or after the kutcheri, wouldn't change a planned list that much either. On another note, an unsupported assertion like "many of today's artistes come up with perfect lists, but oftentimes the music is not even average" doesn't have a lot of merit on its own. Sure, you/others may think so, but not everyone agrees with you - whether it's a majority or not, people are entitled to their views. Well, I think that's the fair way anyway.

Personally, I don't think we can compare yesteryear artists to current ones. There's a difference in talent/skill, voice cultures & capabilities, style and many other elements. Especially in regard to what a crowd expects nowadays compared to what they expected in the yesteryears. There are some of the same people who haven't changed their expectations, and there are people who like the old style...but then, there were people who weren't satisfied back then, but are satisfied now...just as there are people who prefer the 'modernised' version. If it is so problematic or annoying that modern musicians don't even reach average to your standards, perhaps consider not reading about or listening to or watching modern artists' performances?
