Highlights:
Outstanding neraval, manodharma at its peak - like someone possessed.
rare kritis like shaDAnanE and a classic in simhEndra madhyamam were brought out.
Seemingly simple yet, elegantly laid out pallavi, manodharma at its best.
Excellent encouragement to disciples - Smt. Sumitra was given a chance to sing raga alapana in all three ragas, neraval in both kritis and swaras. Even during the virutham, she sang a soulful and classical sindhubhairavi and a classical varALi
Great team work, led from the front by a veteran.

For the past few years ,always smt vedavalli's two disciples accompany her. Two weeks before I had a chance to attend the inaugral first day lec dem of navaAvarana krithis of MD where Smt Vedavalli and pAppu VenugOpala Rao presented .On that day Smt. Sumitra Vasudev sang a slokham in sanskrit (rAgamaliga IIRC DhanyAsi + SAveri +kApi), she is very good too..

I must preface my comments with a disclaimer that I was personally associated with the organization of this concert [it was held in memory of my grandfather].
- The kharaharapriya varNam [one of three composed by Sri Mudicondan - the others are in shaNmukhapriyA and AbhEri] was lovely. The CaraNa 'mArakOti' starts at daivatA, and two of the swara passages ended in Sn - mArakOTi which was very charming.
- nE nendu was rendered in a serene kAlapramANam giving a very different effect to this krithi as compared to the popular brisk renditions.
- The simhEndramadhyamam suite was simply outstanding. Smt. Vedavalli gave ample scope to Smt. Sumitra to sing and then extended the niraval with even more ideas. The whole niraval exercise carried the stamp of tradition and authority.
- The kamAs krithi eschewed kAkaLi nishAda prayOgas which are in vogue today in this rAgA.
- No big surprise that the RTP was superbly executed. The tAnam just flowed effortlessly. It was one continuous construct, not a series of thought processes glued together. The kAlapramANam was brisk and grand with a mizture of long and short phrases. Again, a primer on how tAnam is to be sung. The pallavi focused on niraval rather than mathematics and the overall effect was beautiful - the rAgamAlikA swarams in rItigauLa was especially great with an outstanding response from Smt. Charulata Ramanujam whose tone and bowing was exemplary throughout.
- The slOkam rendition was poignant and beautiful. Smt. Sumitra rendered a captivating sindhubhairavi and IMO really sang in a classy and weighty manner whenever she was given the chance to do so in the concert.
- The percussion duo provided intelligent and subdued accompaniment - it was clear that they were intimately familiar with most of the songs that were sung and it showed in their expert following of the main artiste.
- All in all, it's a privilege to be able to listen to Vedavalli Amma. Her music is serene, thoughtful, intelligent and adheres uncompromisingly to the most rigorous classicism. Something worth emulating for all those of us who are students or rasikas of Carnatic music.
