It was a great concert. All the pieces were rendered with the traditional fervor and deep classicism. As is usual with mami, the piece was totally mesmerising. The manodarmam parts were absolutely absorbing. Sri Ramakrishnan on veenai support and Sri Balaji gelled well and played very well in provinding the right kind of accompaniment for the main artist. Sri Ramachandran was pretty loud.

Would have been a treat of a concert, KS's playing. Haven't heard the chaturangiNi song. Is it possible to hear it?

That would be Ekamranathesvarena. Ekamranatha is the name of Lord Siva in the Kanchipuram temple. It is consistently mispronounced Ekambaranatha in Tamil. I don't know why.rbharath wrote:

Because in tamizh, one of the names for 'the Lord' (as they often say in dance programs!) is EkAmbaram. While it is lovely to hear it in sanskrit in an MD kruti, in tamizh song and speech, he is EkAmbararan or ekAmbaranAdan. Just as we say kIRtanai, vINai in tamizh, those who speak kannaDa say the same words as kIRtane and vINe.

There may be more to this than meets the retina.
Amra - the common sanskRt word for mango becomes AmbA or Amma in the prAkRt-s and pAli respectively.
This is evident from the maharAshtri usage Amba, and the AmmapAli jatakam. Colloquial hindi too uses amvA as opposed to the urban(e) Am.
What is interesting is the emergence of the b sound in the course of the word's metamorphosis, which may account for the tamizh 'mispronunciation/ misspelling'.
While in this kRti, the correct SanskRt form is ekAmranAtha and not EkAmbaranAtha; in other songs, mutthuswamy dikSitar has been conscientious enough to use the local name in the prevalent form and hasn't tweaked with them, to fit them into grammatical frameworks..
examples include dharmasamvardhani and ranganAyakI
The grammarian would be tempted to use the 'corrected' forms - dharmasamvardhini and ranganAyikA..

EkAmra sounds very pleasing to the ears in MD's krutis. Not being true to tamizh there. Sky or fruit, tamizhs are given the name EkAmbaram. Has that got to do with the sky and not the fruit?

Wow! That is SO insightful! Having learnt Sanskrit to quite a level of proficiency, I've ALWAYS wondered if vardhani was correct but told myself that Shri Dikshitar is beyond questioning! And are you saying that nAyaki is wrong?keerthi wrote:

Yes, there is an immortal zoology textbook by EkAmbaranatha iyer, which has seen several successful editions, with the same erratta page printed in each!
The tamizh EkAmbaranAtha must be taken as a metamorphosed form of the Sanskrit EkAmra..
To try and contrive a SanskRt meaning for it may not be fruitful. (forgive the pun)
It is inevitable that some changes come about when words percolate from one language to another.. these mutations must be treated as artifacts of the process of osmosis. one should give some grammatical leeway, while considering these.
In summation, i feel that the tamizh EkAmbara must be treated as identical to the Sanskrit EkAmra, in terms of import and meaning.
And are you saying that nAyaki is wrong?
It isn't so much wrong, as poor style.. It is what would be termed grAmya by the fastidious aesthetes that are sanskRt puNDits.. the correct forms are always nAyikA, dAyikA...
Some other forms which aren't legitimate are Asani, pUraNi, vadani etc.,
