R .Suryaprakash (Vocal)
Pavan (violin).
Satish Sista (mridangam)
Suryaprakash gave an excellent 2 1/2 hour concert on saturday 17 April 2010. The theme was "RAmA" since the concert was arranged around Rama Navami. This was a mike-less chamber concert (which has a certain charm to to it).
Suryaprakash was ably supported by local artists Pavan and Satish Sista.
The concert had a fantastic mix of the familiar and unfamiliar and had something for everyone. The 3 main pieces (purvi kalyani, abheri, and Vijayanagari) were all outstanding.
The song list
1. Nanmayum Selvamum - virutham - hamsadhwani
followed by Sriraghukula - THyagaraja - Hamsadhwani - Adi (S)
2. Asaveri - Charanam Charanam Raghurama - Arunachala Kavirayar - Misra Chapu (R)
3. Rama Rama Kali Kalusha - Ramakali - Dikshithar - Chatusra Rupakam (raga outline)
4. O Rama NEE Namam - Purvikalyani - Bhadrachalam Ramadasar - Adi (R, N, S) with calculations
5. Nagumomu - Abheri - Thyagaraja - Adi (R, S, T)
6. RTP - Vijayanagari - "Lanka Nagara Vijaya - Hare Rama"
Ragamalika swaras in Kambodhi, Chandrakauns
7. Vaidehi Sahitham - virutham in Kedara gowla, Miya-ki-Malhar, Sahana and Brindavani
followed by Rama Manthrava Japiso - Brindavani - Adi - Purandaradasar
8. Pahi Rama Thootha - Shadvidamargini - Rupakam - Thyagaraja
9. Rama Namame Thuthi Maname - Desh- Adi - Thanjavur Sankara Iyer
10. Pavamana
Overall an excellent concert highly appreciated by the 40-50 people who attended this chamber concert (in the apartment of the gracious hosts Alamelu and Bala).

ramakali is a rare rAga , a janya of mm gowlai right.
IIRC I did hear this pallavi in vijayanagari about 2 years back in hamsadhwani, adayar. It was fabulous and was not recorded then. [By any chance if you can get the recording you can atleast put these two numbers in the web ofcourse asking the permission of suryaprakAsh.
I am also particularly interested in hearing the last chandrakauns swaras ,it is always a nightmare to be certain if the raga is candrakowns or kalyanavasantham so much overlap, possibly since this musician has more swara patterns than almost all the performing musicians of today, it would be great to hear that , especially considering it is mike less concert my curiosity is more.
All
On a side note has any one sung vijayanAgari RTP, I searched my tapes could not find one ?

The nishadam of Chandrakauns is very distinct, should not be difficult to differentiate from KV
if you latch to it.

???
are you sure??
The main NiSAdam in chandrakauns is the same KAkali Ni as in KalyANavasantA. Very rarely is the kaisiki Ni used by the singers of few gharAna-s, where they demonstrate the kauns ang by using Kaisiki Ni.

Indeed Ramakali appeared to be derived from Mayamalavagowla and I was told by Suryaprakash that this MD kriti is the only one in this rAgam that he was aware of.
Chandrakauns's key difference from Hindolam / Malkauns is the Ni3 and is differentiated from kalyANavasantham by the lack of Pa and Ri2 in avarohaNam. KV and Chandrakauns share the same Ni3. He developed chandrakauns very carefully and slowly, with several AlAp style phrases, as in HM. With the way he handled it, SP made it clear that he was not singing Kalyanavasantham.
I heard that the organizers may have a recording. If I can get my hands on it (and with Suryaprakash's approval) I will post it.

rAmakali is a very popular hindustani rAgam.
I think it is the only dvi-madhyama rAgam which has suddha madhyama as the pradhAna svaram, over the prati madhyama. i remember reading something like that somewhere. welcome to be corrected
