Few months before in the dikshitar akandam I heard this young vidushi for the first time. This concert was my 2nd concert of her. I was late to hear the finishing nAttai for just few seconds. In a nutshell there are few pluses and few minuses in her concert.

Pluses of the concert:
----------------------
# Her mukhAri was really well done ,she bought the right rAga bhAvam a bit sedate and went very well with the musiri popularized entani nE , especially the neraval kanulAra is just a a beautiful and emotive line and she sang very well.
# I have only heard in recordings this rare yk kAmbOdhi and she sang that quite well with her diction being very clear.THe shankarAbharanam alApanai and the kithi , a tough one was well sung by the vidushi , this krithi is a very difficult krithi to impress and she sang quite a good neraval and swaras in shankarAbharanam.
# The pick of the concert was the last slokham and the malayala pAdam of ST. She sang with the right pace to sustain the dwijAvanthi rasA .

Minuses of the concert:
-----------------------
# Her voice scores very well in pitch, and she packs in general lot of vocal power to her sangathis , but a little smooth and sowkhyam emphasis will be better. At just few places especially in higher notes ,she has a very slight jerky touch.
# The choice of fairly sedate mukhAri entani nE and super sedate yk kAMbOdhi and with speedy vasanthA was a nice choice. But if she had gone with swaras in vasanTA , the contrast with the successive shankarAbharanam would have gelled better. To an extent the concert saggged a bit in shankarAbharanam ,she needs little more internalization to bring in this scholarly krithi of MD(not prime time yet)into the concert platform.

About Accompanists:
------------------
# B.Ananthakrishnan was bit longish for mukhAri and few sangathis did not have the divine nAdham , but overall he played good.
# rajnA's play just reminds of few golden words of UKS. UKS once said "Mridangam artist will initially play for the tAlam ,then play for the songs and then they have to graduate to play for the singer". Rajna can improve in graduating with playing more with the singer , in the sense little more chemistry with the vocalist can bring more exuberance to her play. Overall she played good with a crisp round of tani.

Overall a good to very good concert.

>>9.vaNdu vaNdu??thirruppugazh - sindhubhairavi - AGN<<
rajeshnat:

There are two "vandu vandu" songs in tiruppugazh.
1. vandu vandu mun tavazhndu... This is on tirucchendUr
2. vandu vandu vittURi.... This is on Cidambaram.

There was supposed to be a debut violin performance featuring anjanA(?)Swaminathan accompanied by her sister RajnA on mridangam sometime this week or last (in rAga sudhA hall). Did you attend it?

In this thirruppugazh , keeping with the norm of most thirruppugazhs , I did not get more than three or four words ;) . Apart from vandu vandu there was a word thanjam somewhere rest were bonkers |( .

I did not attend the concert of anjana-rajna. Infact the sisters after the arangetram concert in rAga sudha hall , the very next day they had another one in tattvalOka ,alwarpet. I could not make it to both.

Why should we not take tyAgarAjuni fo refer to the composer himself here?
Also if it refers to Siva why only tiruvArUr. It could be tiruvotriyUr too. Is there a mention of tiruvArUr in the kriti?

See here for the full lyrics and meaning: http://thyagaraja-vaibhavam.blogspot.co ... -raga.html
6 – dAtR vinutuDaina – who is praised by brahmA. This may qualify ‘tyAgarAja’ (Siva) also. However, here, it has been taken as epithet of rAma.
7- tyAgarAjuni cEta pUjalandi – The sequence of events as per caraNa is – (a) worship by tyAgarAja, (b) birth of SrI rAma, (c) marrying sIta. As worship by tyAgarAja, precedes the birth of SrI rAma, ‘tyAgarAja’ seems to refer to Lord Siva.

Thanks, as always, for the review, Rajesh. Whose disciple is Bharathi? I'm sorry if I missed this information somewhere.

I am not sure of her guru though some one above has mentioned PSN .Everyone takes PSN as their guru , may be I am interested in knowing about other gurus of her too. The very first time I came to know about her is when I saw a poster in rathnagireeshwarar temple at besantnagar to hear prashant's concert. Incidentally I saw her name there in that poster and that concert was completely championed by vijaysiva, may be she is also getting some tips from VS too is my calculated guess

Yeah! For vocalists! I've come to believe AK to be the Guru General for violinists and UKS, for mridangists.

I clearly refers only to paramasivan. chaturmukha brahmA could have very well paid his respects to tiruvArur tyAgarAjan and not tiruvayyAr tyAgarAjan.

Also, I said tiruvArUr, as tyAgarAjasvAmi was born there, assuming that temple and Lord would have been close to his heart! It can also be tiruvORRiyUr tyAgarAjan.

This is what V Govindan gives in his blogspot.
caraNam 3
dhAtR vinutuDaina tyAgarAjuni
cEta pUjalu-andi bAguga
pradyOtana-anvayamunanu janinci
sItA pati-ani pEru kaligina (vADE)

O My Mind! Only He is The God,
who is praised (vinutuDaina) by Lord brahmA (dhAtR),
who having been worshipped (pUjalu andi) (pUjalandi) by the very hands (cEta) of Lord Siva - tyAgarAja (tyAgarAjuni), and
who having nicely (bAguga) born (janinci) in the Solar (pradyOtana) dynasty (anvayamunanu) (pradyOtanAnvayamunanu),
has (kaligina) the name (pEru) as (ani) ‘Consort (pati) (patiyani) of sItA’.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for my question.
I am OK with the dhAtR vinutaDaina (praised by BrahmA). Why can't "tyAgarAjuni cEta pUjalu-andi " be taken as "worshipped by tyAgarAja (the composer)" since there is no other place where the composer's mudra is present in this kriti? If it meant Lord Siva did he worship with his hands (cEta)? We don't know if and how Siva worshipped but we (humans) do so with our folded hands.
Musically and literally knowledgeable Telugu folks can pitch in here.
