about dance dress

This dance dress the way we use nowadays is less then 100 years old... the old sculptures of dancing girls also don't show exatly the kind of ornaments and dresses we use today. What do you people think about that? For me it looks like a very "new tradition" but it's just accepted by everyone. I was thinking about it cause it does neither reflect the past nor show the nowadays. So we see that Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, for ex, use something like a kuchipudi costume and other dancers also make little changes on their costumes. I don't know exatly about her studies of natya shastra on this specific topic - I'd love to know about that. But how do you people see that point?
