N. Ravikiran ( traditional Chitraveena) with Mysore Nagaraj (V), Trichy Sankaran (M) and Giridhar Udupa (G) gave an exquisite recital at the special venue at Hotel Maris. His was the last recital of a full day event featuring a couple of other concerts earlier in the day.
Ravikiran rendered the following:
1. Varnam: Hindolam : (own comp)
2. Sourashtram - saranu siddhivinayaka - M Chaapu-Purandaradasa
3. Jhankaaradhwani - Phanipatisaayi- Aadi- Tyagaraja
4.Poorvikalyani-Jnanamosaga- Rupaka- tyagaraja
5.Khamas -Brochevarevarura - Aadi - Mysore vasudevachar (main piece of the recital)
6.Jonpuri- Eppovaruvaro
7.Maund-Neerajadalanayana
8. Mangalam
The Jhankaaradhwani kriti was unique and came in afresh.
The main kriti with a neat raga recital and the celebrated chitta swara-s was grand. Swaraprastara was 'edutaining' with maestro Trichy sankaran contributing immensely to the laya segment. HisTani with giridhar was scintillating and illustrative of a vintage style.
Nagaraj provided enthusiastic violin support.
The 5.5 Kattai pitch of the Chitraveena reverberated throughout and created a Naadaprapancha which merged well with the right ambiance and a highly receptive audience.
Ravikiran supplemented th recital with relevant remarks where needed.
Audience response was such that the one day mela seemed to be as good as an entire series of any sabha, much to the satisfaction of the committed organisers!!

That was an awesome programme one of the bests in this dec.season I have heard.
The sub main in JhankAradhwani was a pleasant surprise.RK played it beautifully and Nagaraj fully took the advantage of playing next by adding his own wits and presented a superlative version. In fact Bombay Jeyashree familiarized this kriti in the 90's.S.Sowmya used to sing a kriti in ragam 'Poorna Lalita', a janyam of Jangaradhwani.Oh...then,those were the days of healthy competition.Nagaraj's KhamAs was also very good.
The Hindolam varnam had a thuLLal and I felt like dancing.Hope some good dancer uses that.
The crowd gave a standing ovation after the tani befitting the master's(Dr.Sankaran) role.

Such a shame i missed it, i couldnt find this in the paper.. As a result i had to go to Gayathri Venkatraghavan at the rAgasudhA, where i was forced to endure Tiruvarur Vadyanathan's horrible mrudangam playing, as he single handedly managed to spoil what was otherwise a good concert by BANGING his instrument away as if he had some scores to settle with his mrudangam ]
