Re: shri raja rajeshwari-mayamalavagowla varnam meaning
This is the first varnam and the first song I learnt from my Sangeetha Acharya Sri Flute Gopalakrishna Iyer, of Kalanikethana, Mangaluru, 64 years ago. I think I have attended more than 2000 concerts in the last 65 years (I am 74 years old). I have never heard anyone singing this varnam at a concert. That puzzled me because this varnam is one of the most beautiful and majestic varnams, and it brings out ragabhaava of Mayamalavagowla so completely. It has several exquisitely beautiful sangatis. I have heard varnams such as Evari bodhana (Abhogi), Era naapai (Thodi), Vanajakshi (Kalyani), and Sarasooda (Saveri) dozens of times, but never this varnam. The composer of this varnam is not known. There are two or three versions of this varnam, each slightly different, with slightly different lyrics. The composer of this varnam is not known. I think it is melodious, soothing to hear, and simply wonderful. So two years ago, in April 2016, when I gave a concert at the Arkay Convention Center, Mylapore, Chennai, I decided to sing it. (I was 72 years old). Shree R K Sriramkumar accompanied me on the violin, and Shree Akshay Ananthapadmanabhan on the mridangam.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhqtcRFgZGE I hope more vocalists learn it, and improve it by embellishing it with a few sangathis, and sing at their concerts. I think it is good to start a concert with Mayamalavagowla, the King of Ragas, because it has sowkhya bhaava in abundance. I am not a professional vocalist, but I love Carnatic music passionately. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Sri T M Krishna, or Sri Ramakrishna Murthy, Sri Vignesh Ishwar, or Sri Dr. Cherthala Ranganatha Sharma, or any top vocalist with good voice sang this varnam?
