Absolutely outstanding concert... TNK mama was in great form last night and treated us to several alapanas in the course of the 2.5 hr concert. Shri, Harikambhoji, Ritigaula, Kambhoji, Behag and his perennial favorite Surutti... I'm still in a kind of ethereal trance. Just when we thought he was about to wind up after the Tiruppavai he sprang a surprise; that Jonpuri tillana was one of the most electrifying pieces of bowmanship I have heard. One must specially mention the subtle sophisticated accompaniment of Easwaran Sir and the sparkling tani in tandem with Gopalakrishnan. Viji supported her father competently. In his brief comments after the varnam, TNK spoke about his association with legendary masters of the past and specifically about how he learnt the Narayanagaula varnam from Semmangudi Narayanaswamy Iyer (SSI's cousin) at the age of 11.

Interesting to note that Sri Subrahmanyaya is in Tisra Eka. I was always under the impression (purely from the way the way the time is kept, not having learnt it myself), that it was in Rupaka which, of course, is a multiple of the former, making my point a bit of a quibble.
Anyway, guess will need to make sure to make ample room for TNK concerts this season...just 2 more days now - can't wait!

I have seen artistes sing this krithi putting Tisra Ekam (2-kalai) as well as Rupakam (2 -kalai). By Rupakam 2-kalai, I mean 4 beats (no fingers shown) followed by 2 waves. Both ways you get 24 units per cycle.vijay wrote:Interesting to note that Sri Subrahmanyaya is in Tisra Eka. Ah, Narayanagowla!! After his concert at SIFA in the Bay Area, CA I had an opportunity to speak to him and asked him about the paucity of Narayanagowlas in the concert circle. He said it may be due to the fact that it's close to K'gowla and Surati. He also mentioned that the Narayangowla varnam was a personal favorite of his and that he enjoyed MDR's rendition of it very much.

>> This is majestically sung by Sri MDR
Yes, but any modern artists? Unfortunately I was not alive to see MDR live in action ...
>> sarma, Is there a recording of this on sangeethapriya or anywhere else?
Are you asking about a recording of the TNK concert or a recording of the varnam alone?
TNK's version is here:

A commerical CD has MSG's version.
