Sri Vijay Venkateswar performed on the Vichitraveena (pls forgive my ignorance at the difference between Vichitraveena, Chitraveena, Gottuvadyam) at Trimurthy Sangeetha Sabha, Pozhichalur Chennai to the accompaniment of Pudukkottai Ambikaprasad and Mannarkoil J.Balaji (myself) on the mridangam.
Song list
Vanajaksha - Behag
Mahaganapathim-Nata
Orajupuju-Kannadagowla
Ne pogada Kunte-Varaali
Neerajakshi Kaamakshi-Hindolam
Mrudubhashana-Maaruva Dhanyasi
Raghuvara Nannu-Pantuvarali
miscellaneous items
He was excellent throughout the concert and he had excellent control of the instrument. Enthralled the audience with his authoritative playing. Raga sanchaaras, swaraprasthaaras and Laya intricacies were really gud. a complete musician. I also over heard that he can play as much as 12 instruments. (Three i know-vichitraveena, Flute and violin).

Ambikaprasad did an excellent job on Hindola Ragam and he gave an exquisite essay of pantuvarali.

On the whole the concert was a great success. Want to impress upon the fact that Mr.Vijay Venkateswar is a musician to be taken note of.

This has been written to make our readers know about the existence of musician of such high calibre and not to project of promote myself or my concerts.

Thanks, Balaji for that 'court-side' view! Reminds me a little bit of the ATP and WTA where the players have started blogging about their matches...

ah, recording on the ipod? I started doing that a few years ago and have never looked back, the recording quality is fantastic and it is easy to record full kutcheries from anywhere in the auditorium with good quality!

Very nice of you to come forward and posting a kutcheri review. That reminds me 3 years back when I walked to a leading musician and said , there are some interesting rasikas and lot of good discussions in internet site. For which the musician said with arrogance "AthuvA andha siteA, vela vetti illAtha gOshti(jobless crowd logging into internet forums ) "

Quick feedback, u being a mridangist you have to post the tAlam too in your songlist, u can't stop with rAgam...

Unfortunately coolkarni ji .. i was prohibited from recording by the Main Artiste Himself citing that he doesnt allow any one to record the concert. What a miss i feel ? Since the whole concert was so good especially the Hindolam all of us were in full flow. Anyway more is experienced on the spot than thru recording.
rshankar --> do you know it is really court side view ... Another name for court is Kutcheri .. hahaha it is my court side vew.

sankirnam--> ipod is very cool and very gud .. and i am able to edit the files almost imdly. cool aid

Rajeshnat--> i give below the talas serial wise :1- Adi
2-> Eka Tala 3) Adhi Tala 4) Khanda Chaapu 5) Rupaka Tala 6) Adhi 7) Adhi (2 kalai)

Thnks for the encouragement. I hope to build up healthy relationships and healthy talks with you all folks without offending anyone or wounding any sentiments.

Coolkarni, even though I am hardly qualified to analyze UKS sir's playing, I will do so in another thread. Maybe if Balaji sir here is not busy, he can also contribute to that.
I have recorded several concerts on my ipod, but just like Balaji sir here, I have not posted them for fear of repercussions from the artists or others..

The talented artiste in question is Vijay Venkateshwara (Inala) not Rao. You can see his webpage at www.vijayvenkateshwar.com

I have heard him play the flute and the vichitra veena and he is indeed a very talented artiste, that deserves more opportunities.

please dont.Hopefully we have achieved a fine balance in using tracks just for educating ourselves and we can lawys work within these restrictions..
Though I cannot help feeing sad that these great moments just float into thin air or as CML puts it , into the antennae of some alien , in another galaxy !

Dear Mridangam,
It was good to see your review. Indeed i had opportunity to listen to Vijay on some occasions and meeting him back stage too and it was always stunning and a much satisfying experience with the kind of creative music he played and he truely plays violin Flute and Vicitra Veena masterly. His name is vijay venkateshwar and there is no rao i guess and please try to correct it. oh, if you played for him you must know his name. it is surprising he is not featured in this season. I agree he deserves prime slots as his music is superb.

Hi balaji Good to see your review about Vijay and Vichitra veena, But i would like to tell you some thing about vichitra veena, chitra veena,Gottuvadyam,Athi Chitra Veena,Mohana Veena ect.. Vichitra veena is a north indian stringed insrtument is already there in northindia and the chitra veena and the Gottuvadyam is same but now a days some of the Gottuvadyam players like me have designed an instrument with a small body and with the same features like Gottuvadyam and named it Chitra veena and Athi Chitra Veena. About Mohana Veena it is also a north indian instrument played in the slide guitar it is only a modfyed guitar and played the NorthIndain Music... The playing method is same for all these Instruments..If i want to send the photos of the Vichitra Veena and Gottu Vadyam and Chitra veena how do I?
Thankyou see you soon again....

Hi Balaji sir

as the younger brother of a concert mridangist, I must say congrats to you on coming out with the review of the concert, where you yourself have played. When ever I have asked my anna about any of the concerts he has played, his constant reply has been " Avaalukku enna, romba nanna padina, violin accompaniment, supurba irrundudu. Aaga motham nalla kutchery". In fact it had become a joke in the family in that whenever we ask the question to anna and we ourselves will give the answer to the question. So much for anna's reviews of concerts....Please keep it going........regards.........Sam

Sam,
That's funny. Shows what a gentleman your bro is! I bet Balaji is a good player. We are glad to read his posts. He would do well following in your brother's foot steps. (Balaji, I say it merely because we are talking about a veteran player here)...

Hi allamgaru very nice and thanks for the clarification too. You could have been more elaborate on each of the instruments and where they are exactly different. You can upload the photos of all the instruments in any of the free hosts or alternatively you can upload pictures in Yahoo Photos and give the link here for the Rasikas@org to view and make use of it.
Thanks again
JB

Shri Allam garu thnks very much for the pictures. From the picture I find that what Mr.Vijay Venkateshwar played was Chitraveena or Gottuvadyam only. The instrument he brought didnot look like Vichitra Veena or Ati Chitra Veena. Will there be any further clarifications from any source pls ?
