Hi Rasikas,
I'm learning jatiswarams along with geethams. I also got a taste of "Swagatham krishna". But before I start the kriti, i need to sing manodharma swarams. Does anybody have some pointers on how to work to sing Manodharma swarams?
One more doubt..when a singer practises, he/she would form some patterns and then would sing the same in kutcheris..so ideally these manodharma swarams are not off-the-cuff performances but things that have been practised and fine-tuned by the singers, right?
Just put out my understanding, do pour in your suggestions.
Regards,
Deepu.

Potential can of worms! Manodharma might refer to "not completely formated or completely rehearsed" rather than "completely spontaneous". With a lot of practice, one can appear quite spontaneous, if that makes any sense. In the meanwhile, please do continue practising and all the best!

Very good Naryan. Distinction with a difference.
Spontaneous and extemporaneous are similar in meaning but there are differences. One meaning of extemporaneous is 'Carefully prepared but delivered without referring to the notes or material'.. It does not quite cut it for our purposes here but it takes us three fourths there. It is not regurgitation of what was prepared without referring to the material but using what was prepared and 'taken in' to exhibit extemporaneous exposition.
As we had talked about before, it is more like the manodharma we see in public speaking. Public speakers definitely prepare their material ahead of time, they have a pretty good idea on what they want to speak about, in what order, using what examples etc. but once they get on stage, an element of manodharma kicks in based on many factors like the building, the stage setup, the audience and their reaction etc. So the speech on the same topic will vary quite a bit on different venues but there will be a common thread which is the reflection of the preparation.
As in public speaking, may be the first 10 times, what was spoken/sung was exactly same as what was prepared. But once a comfort zone sets in with the material, a certain feel is achieved which results in freedom from not having to strick to the prepared material. That is when the manodharmic departures are automatically achieved.
I relate to the manodharma in CM along these lines. It is a rough analogy.

Manodharma Singing . The only thing that the artist brings to the table . Rest all is borrowed , stolen , copied , taught .
Manodharma - The last cliff that the climber conquers . With some artists it is a different peak , each time . With some it is the same peak. Again and again.
