Re: Lyrics to Vaayu Maindaney shabdam
Ambika - here you go...unlike many other Sabdams, this one does offer a lot of scope for sancAris.
1: vAyu maindanE vAnara vIranE vAnavar poTriDum pAdanE
unai vAyAra pADi manamAra tudittiDa vandaruL purivAi mArutiyE
varam tandaruL karuNai mArutiyE
Oh son (manindanE) of the Wind God (vAyu) [1], brave one (vIranE) from the monkey clan (vAnara), one whose feet (pAdanE) are praised (pOTRiDum) by the celestials (vAnavar), please come (vandu) and bless me (aruL purivAi) to sing (pADi) about you (unai) to my heart/mouth’s content (vAyAra) [2], and praise (tudittiDa) you to my mind’s content (manamAra) [2], Oh mAruti (mArutiyE). Please grant (tandaruL) this boon (varam), Oh compassionate (karuNai) mAruti [1]!
2: bAlakanAga irunda pozhudil kAlai raviyai kaniyena paritta
pAdakan indiran gadaiyAl aDittiDa vAyu vENDiDa varam pala peTravA
When (pozhudil) you were (irunda) a child (bAlakanAga), (Oh son of the Wind God), you were the one who plucked (paritta) the sun (raviyai) one morning (kAlai) mistaking it (ena) for a fruit (kani), and when the heinous (pAdakan) Indra (indiran) beat (aDittiDa) you with his mace (gadaiyAl), at the intervention/request (vENDiDa) of the Wind God (vAyu), you are the one who obtained (peTRavA) several (pala) boons (varam) [3].
3: rAma nAmam solli Azh kaDal tANDi rAkSasi chayAgrahiyai vazhiyilE venru
rAja sEvaki lankiNiyai konru rAja vIdiyil senravA
Chanting (solli) the name (nAmam) ‘rAm’ (rAma), you are the one who crossed (tANDi) the deep (Azh) sea (kaDal), defeating (venru) the demoness (rAkshasi) chAyagrahi (chAyagrahiyai) on the way (vazhiyil) [4], and killing (konru) the royal (rAja) servant (sEvaki), lankiNi (lankiNiyai), walked (senravA) along the royal (rAja) path (vIdiyil).
4: rAmar kathai solli kaNaiyAzhi tandu rAmar magizhndiDa cUDAmaNi peTru
rAvaNan mAindiDa ashOka vanattilE rAvaNan maindanai konravA
(On son of the Wind God), you are the one who gave (tandu) the signet ring (kaNaiyAzhiyai) (to sItA) after reciting (solli) the story (kathai) of rAma (rAmar), and received (peTRu) the cUDAmaNi in return, to rAma’s delight (mgizhndiDa). You are the one who killed (konravA) the son (maindanai) of rAvaNa [5] in the ASOka vana (vanattilE), to rAvaNa’s dismay/sorrow (mAindiDa).
5: pOril ilakkuvan uyirinai kAttu rAvaNan mAindiDa tandayai vENDi
bharatan magizhndiDa noDiyinil tETri pArinil perum pugazh peTravA
You protected (kAttu) the life (uyirinai) of lakshmaN (ilakkuvan) in the heat of the battle (pOril) [6], and you prayed (vENDi) to your father (tandaiyai) for rAvaNa’s death (mAindiDa) [7], and to bharata’s delight (maghindiDa) you relieved his anxiety (tETRi) in a second (noDiyinil) [8], and achieved/earned (peTRavA) enormous (perum) fame (pugazh) on this earth (pArinil).
FOOTNOTES
[1] hanumAn is the son of vAyu and anjanA dEvi – he is called vAyu putra, marut suta (mAruti), pavanAtmaja, pavan tanay, anjana suta, vAyu kumara etc. - He is also called kEsari suta, as kEsari is anajanA dEvi’s husband, hanumAn’s foster dad
[2] vAyAra – to the satisfaction (Ara) of one’s mouth (vAi); manamAra – to the satisfaction (Ara) of one’s heart/mind (manam)
[3]This whole segment refers to the story when hanumAn as a child jumped high into the skies and plucked the sun out and put it into his mouth – as the world was plunged into darkness, the Gods were appealed to, and Indra in his haste knocks hanumAn unconscious – even as the sun gets out of his mouth, his father, vAyu is enraged and becomes still, stifling the whole world – vAyu agrees to let air move and people breathe only after hanumAn is revived and is granted several boons (that he harnesses during his search for sItA), with the caveat that hanumAn’s awareness of his prowess will only return after he meets rAma
[4] Refers to a story that is unique to Kamba rAmAyaNa – as hanumAn is crossing the ocean, he comes across a demoness who grabs (grahi) the shadows (chAyA) of creatures that fly across and feeds on them; when she tries to do the same to hanumAn, he frees himself with a powerful kick
[5]Refers to the defeat of akshay kumAr
[6] Refers to the story of bringing the sanjIvini mountain to revive lakshmaN and other felled warriors
[7] No idea about the mythological story behind this
[8] rAma sends hanumAn (with another ring as proof) ahead of them as they return from lankA to ayOdhyA, to let bharata know that they are not far behind, for rAma is worried that bharata, true to his promise, would immolate himself if rAma took a second longer than 12 years to return and claim his throne (topic of aruNAcala kavirAyar’s vandAn, vandAn bharatA, raghurAman vandAn, vandAn bharatA, tuned in madhyamAvatI)
