Kulkarni sa'ab,
In your inexhaustable supply (is seems like a renewable source of wonder to me!), do you have these compositions of Tyagaraja, preferably vocal renditions?
1. vara shiKi vAhana
2. sari yevvarE srI jAnakI?
3. srI janaka thanayE
4. dhEhi thava padha Bakthim
5. pAhi rAma dhUtha
6. kalugunA padha nIraja sEvA
7. vinathA sutha rArA (huseinI)

Thanks!

Ravi,

Here is 'Dehi Tavapada'. Although I have heard no less than ten different singers singing this composition, this rendition comes out on top, the swaroopam of Sahana coming out beautifully (KJY in 1968 at Shanmukhananda, Bombay)

http://rapidshare.de/files/7671165/Dehi ... a.mp3.html

Pahi Ramadootha is certainly an MDR masterpiece. I will upload 'Sariyevvare Sri Janaki' shortly

Chembai,
THAT was lovely: and an early KJY, when he was 'unsullied' by cinema pAttu (as my mother would say!). THANK YOU so very much!

Srkris,

I have a special liking for the raag Sahana. The one you had uploaded is a super piece. Srirangam TR Kannan, a relatively unknown vidwan but known in Tiruppugazh circles, used raag Sahana to sing the piece "Mundhu Tamizh Maalai" (which the vidwans used to sing in Chenchuruti). Thanks for cherry picking this song.

In the teleserial Rail Sneham, KJY rendered a song in Sahana. Do you have that piece with you? His voice was so mellifluous and magical that it captured the essence and beauty of Sahana so well.

Since you agree with that in the early days KJY was singing well, I would not hesitate to make yet another atrocious request of sparing the entire concert, if possible.

Kaumaaram,

Thanks, I hope I had the entire concert with me, but sadly I dont. I downloaded this song from a website I am not able to recollect, and that website had a couple of other songs by him as well.

I also dont have the teleserial song you mentioned.

Although I wouldnt go as far as stating that KJY was singing well enough earlier, I can certainly say it was probably a lot lot better than his current form. ;)

Just finished hearing MDR's Pahi Rama Dhootha. It is in Shadvidhamargini (42nd mela, Prathi MAdhyama Ragam), rather than in Vasanthavarali (Suddha Madhyama Janya Ragam). Did any of the professional artits sing it / play it in that ragam? Is a true Vasantha Varali version of Pahi Rama Dhootha available at all?

Chithra,
Thanks for that clarification: as far as I can tell from my books, Tyagaraja composed it in vv and not shadviDHamArgiNI!...Does anyone know how/when/why it was changed?
Chembai,
I agree with you that the older (untainted KJY) was better than the later version: My mother makes a very interesting observation: the likes of MLV, DKP and MSS in her opinion benefited from their forays into singing for movies (according to her, it made them emote their songs better, and the clarity of their sAhithyam was better, their pronunciation was absolutely clear, they did not muff words etc), but she feels that KJY and more recently, Unnikrishnan's music may have suffered from their forays into tinseldom. Any comments from the more experienced? Does it reflect the fact that over time, movie music has evolved away from CM?

Doesnts MDRs version use G1 and not G2? G2 would be in shaDvidamArgini. From what I could tell (this has been discussed on sangeetham.com), his version (as usual top-notch MDR stuff) is a mixture of vachaspati and varali. The is closest to that is navanItam (41) which differs from shaDvidamArgini (46) in the gandharam (G1 vs G2).

What is more interesting is someone mentioned on sangeetham.com that TNS performed some other krithi in shaDvidamArgini and it *also* sounded like a mixture of vAcaspati and varali. Unless shaDvidamArgini at some point in history was used to refer to navanItam by some. But where is vasantavarALi in all this (:-)

It just doesnt add up.

Thanks for the MLV version! I am not sure if the person given credit on the mayyam site (Lyrics: Surabhi) is correct. Anyway, if you get a chance, listen to the version of this song by Radha Badri (a regular vocalists for BarathanAtyam dancers) and another by Ganesh (of the Ganesh Kumaresh violin duo) for the film 'Dance Like a Man'. They are both wonderful, but I think Ganesh's version is better than even this gem from MLV that you've posted.
I too collect old tamizh movie songs, especially the ones sung by MLV: I love the ones where she sang playback for Padmini because many of them had scintillating choreography. I have been fortunate to collect video/DVD clips of these songs, and they make for great watching, especially on snowy, gloomy days!

I am a new member here but somewhat old in sangeetham discussion forum where i have seen your postings. Would you be able to kindly post MDR compositions (which he has sung himself in some cases). I saw an earlier thread on the same but didn't catch in time. Atleast, can you post 'Velavane' in Sahana?

If you want to forget a player for each format and be able to play all formats in a single player, you might be tempted to try "Real Alternative", which plays every conceivable format (both audio and video) I know...

Thanks for the song. Actually, I learnt it in the raag Naarayani. However, I have a copy it wher Sri Chembai sang it in Bilahari, which a bit confuses me. Did you learn it Narayani too or in Bilahari?

It is in Narayani all right... The question is where did Chembai learn it in Bilahari, or whether he changed it himself to Bilahari... all the recordings where he sings it are in Bilahari. I dont know whether he is justified in changing the raga thus, that too of a Dikshitar Kriti.

Iam fanatic of Dikshitar, when I downloaded it I was expecting a magnificient Narayani coming out of Chembai and was shocked to hear Bilahari. At one point I even thought that may be the raaga lakshana of Narayani itself is diff from what I learnt. Now that you have confirmed I can rest in peace.
