Kumbakonam Swaminathan-Mridangam

This was a very emotional concert; the artiste announced that he was dedicating the concert to his father Adayar Balu (Mridangam vidwan) who passed away only last week. His mental strength and strong desire to pay respects to his father with this concert was commendable and deserve the strongest admiration.

I had never heard of him, but there were shades of Dr. Ramani and sure enough he is a student of Dr. Ramani. Dr. Ramani himself was there from start to finish. The playing was simply brilliant and I would strongly recommend him to anyone who has not heard him.

1. Hamsadwani- very pleasing kriti, but could not identify it.
2. Marivere-Anandabhairavi: a short and emotive alapana followed by a very soothing and elaboration of the kriti with kalpana swarams. This kriti to me is about absolute surrender and took a different meaning altogether under the circumstances.
3. Bilahari-Parithanamichithe
4. Rama nee samanamevaru-Kharaharapriya: excellent alapanai and rendition of the kriti.
5. the concert ended with Meenakshi Memudam dehi-Purvikalyani. Brilliant again. The kriti was followed by thani, which was a shade too long for a 90 minute concert, but the playing was very nice.

I will give more details later.

But in all an excellent and emotional concert. I am glad I got to see this young artiste.
