Be not afraid of moving slowly, be afraid of standing still -A Chinese Proverb

Vocal : TiruvArur Girish - grandson of sangeetha kalanidhi Smt BrindA

Concert duration/Day : 1 hour and 55 mins/Saturday
Concert Type : Non Nirvana (one prime evening concert to follow)

Brinda-Muktha is one school where I have not adequately listened . Last year in 2010 , Girish had a concert in Sriranjani sabhA ,shanmughapriya hall which I could not attend, though planned . Incidentally about 6 years back I had attended a concert of rama ravi/nandita ravi , it was an exlusive crt on padams and javalis and it was a pretty good one.

Girish had a slot where there was one previous concert who finished bit late and he also had to finish roughly an hour back as Bombay Jayashri's ticketed concert followed next and there is more time needed for sound adjustment.

Few Highlights:
-----------------

# Girish had a very heavy and masculine voice ,at many a times I felt his voice timbre was kind of matching with a rare star of yesteryears - vOleti venkateshwarulu. His physical sareeram was also bit heavy, if I could make a cheeky comment it was inzamam ul haq'ish with a sandana poTTu.

# One of my favourite varnams is AbhOgi , and he was testing his voice with a nice rAgasketch in Ah Ah Bogi. The varnam rendition was perhaps very original , I am bit accustomed and perhaps bleached by some high speed evari bOdhana ranging from maharajapuram vishwanatha Iyer to few contemporaries of today , but Girish sang distinctly maintaining a nice 1st and 2nd speed rendition. Great first impression

# Moved immediately to his grandma's very impressive MMGOWLAI. I have not heard smt brinda-muktha singing mAyatheetha , it is a MDR classic and very recently tadapalli made me speechless with his rendition. The melancholy touch of mmgowlai was indeed there and I was bit disappointed he did not sustain that introspective melancholy , as he did not singing a neraval and he just sang few avarthana swaras . In short MMGowlai was a quick dissolved M&M candy

# The next rendition was in karunajooda ninnu in shree rAgam and he presented quite well could have elaborated but nevertheless passable . The next ambA paradevate in rudrapriyA with his round of cittaswaras was not that appealing the blend of his patterns just did not match that well with AS ranganathan's mrudangam, certainly rudrapriyA dipped the quality of the concert.

# PoorvikalYani alApana was the submain. I was seated with another Brindamma's student KnandagOpal from kolkata for this and next concert . I whispered to him that poorvikalyAni is chasing me a lot , he said ditto. In the alapana there were quite a few good moments of excellence and there were few off key sangathis where shruthi appeared bit off. The rare GKB krithi message was intact with only sAhitya anubhavam , it was a case of little excessive respect or squat of Girish giving to sAhitya shuddam in neraval, I prefer attimes more of a disparate manOdharam exercise that is also more synergistic with the different contours of rAga bhavam (Attn Bilahari)

# kAlanidhi was a quick filler but with tOdi his music was in classical zone of very high intensity. AlApana was well rounded his voice was very deep and long kArvais were well held and the krithi rendition was well done too. There was not a touch of any tOddy aNavsiyam there , neraval was again like a poorvikalyAni bit Ok perhaps in contrast to alap and swaras it was not that intensely absorbing. His swaras were very aesthetic there was no stillness the speed was gentle and slow but very intense in rAga bhavam.

# The pick of the day was surprisingly the last number , some organizer did ask him to wrap , he said one more number and he sang a really wonderful behag alapana , his voice , pitch all zoned to a very very sweetest spot and continued with a lovely javali in behAg , maharAju karammanE ,I liked this javali and the preceding behAg alapana and it was the most impressive number.

# The violin accompanist ambikA prasAd played just good , I would say there was bit of intrusion for few krithis. The mrudangist was good , the tani was just a quick pass which was understandable.

# I am hearing Girish for the first time , his strong voice  , unhurried sancharas were key takeaways for me . I wish his behAg sedateness with a strong voice kept going on.As I and nandagopal moved out , We did see there was more crowd coming in for Bombay Jayashri, that included many whom I dont know and few I know, all were in hurry and move mode to get in . The attendance for this concert was just 5% of the big hall (around 50 Max of possibly at least 1000 capacity), i wish he atleast had 100.

Overall a very good concert for nearly 2 hours
