Philosophical and spiritual connections are often needed in a performer to build a deep relationship with classical music. It is this inherent quality that creates character and completeness on singing, tonal perfections, raga physiognomies, tala constructs and helps them to share the inestimable musical treasures that they slick as part of their musical scholarship and discovery. Smt. VS is one such rare phenomenon that perfects the performing art eminently by the adherence of the above rationale.
Smt VS started her concert today with Nattai based pavanathmaja that signified her great reverence, palpable emotions and the seasonal form that she is already. This mystical Sadhaki intensified her recital with the second performance on ravichandrika (Maakelara) where she scaled her own benchmarks on the ingenuity, tonality, sublimity and emotive benefaction. The singer-mastero then graduated higher to Jaganmohini based Sivagama sundari to enlighten all the musical aficionados by balancing her ‘intuition’, ‘instincts’, ‘inner-soul’, ‘imaginations’ and ‘innovation’ to deliver an exquisite dose of improvisations through hearty alaaps, oceanic sargams, succinct bol-vistaars and strong behlawas.
Smt. VS then moved up the recital with kedar based parimala ranganatham where she manifested multi-dimensional approach on manodharma (elaborative alaap with playoffs on the notes ‘pm’ ‘dm’ and riffed-passages surrounding ‘m p d n s n d p mm r s’ as baseline) with almost every facet prescribed in the encyclopedia of Carnatic music. Her gayaki influenced a combination of Gwalior and kasur-patiala ang besides reinforcing the world-class learning and her multi-decade of guru-shishya association with late Shri. S. Rajam was reflecting pervasively in every essence of her avid rendition today.
Smt. VS enhanced her emotional quality with the next khamas based ‘ naan enna thavam’ bandish and presented an expressive inflections to build an absorbed ether.Smt. VS pushed her creative quotient even higher with her main-presentation rama bana (saveri) and spelled a marvelous glimpse of her instant ideations through sargams, alaap and bol-baants It was also a class-par-excellence giving the complete mastery of the raagdhari and laykaari during every possible avenue of this presentation.
Smt. VS delighted the rasikas uninterruptedly with her final presentation by maintaining the sublime slant all through. She started with raag-mala based tamil vritham and then reached the climax of the concert with the a brisk and racy kanthamani based bandish Naadha sukham.
Sri. Ravi on mridangam and Smt. Ranjani Ramakrishnan were awesome on their departments . Some of the phrases that Smt. Ranjani executed in kedar were astounding and like-wise, some of the rhythm-patterns that Ravi produced added great weight to the rendition. Sri. AS Krishnan also extended a nice support on the morsing.
The artistic mysticism, soulful renditions and rare sahityas continued to remain her niche forte today and captivated all the rasikas seeking classical-purity in carnatic music.
