TMK-RKSK-TSS-BSP-NGP Kalaraasna Jan 8, 2011

Post by Enna_Solven »

T.M. Krishna
R.K. Shriramkumar
Trichy Shankaran
B.S. Purushotham
N. Guruprasad

Listened to this concert over the web. It is good to be able to listen to big concerts from across the globe! Concert started too early for US central time on a Sunday. Caught it only after a hour into the concert, I think. Will hear the rest when it is webcast again tomorrow. Some surprise as usual: there was no thanam in RTP ;) The ragam was alternated between TMK and RKSK, but was not fully done. Pallavi was the one sung by SSI, as I read on the web. Have not heard it myself before. It had longish phrases and quite soothing, fit for shankarAbharanam. The swara-ragamalika was beautiful. RKSK amazes as usual. He can shadow the artist and terrific on his own turn too.

There were three thani's, all interesting. Shankaran sir's mridangam tone was beautiful and came across the web nicely :) Thanks to TMK for enabling good audio quality.

Will pay & listen again if I can get concerts from Chennai like this!

Partial song list:

Thanks E_S. A positive endorsement for the concert and the streaming service! I like the concept of the remote concert attendance and review :D

Ravi, The hamir kalyani kriti is a composition of HH Sri Chandrasekhara bharati of the Sringeri peetam.
It was tuned to hamir kalyani by Sri RK Sriram Kumar.

Very nice list. A long post-pallavi/thukkda list for TMK; I suppose 4 hours gives you a lot of opportunity for all of that and a detailed pallavi with a separate tani. As Ravi asks, I also wonder where the third tani would have been.

I love the pAsuram oonEru selvathu. TMK's version in the Ksetra Tirupati, Charsur album is noteworthy.

I debated whether I should stream this concert. I just couldn't fit it in today, notwithstanding the time zone differences.

The first thani went for half an hour. The second was about 10 minutes. Then they played again for a few minutes at the end of the thiruppugazh. Sankaran sir changed the mridangam after the first thani. The second one sounded more vibrant. Why did he do that? Do mridangams go bad in the middle of a concert?

I was reading the concert chat messages after the concert. Somebody had mentioned that TMK did thAnam for nAttai, perhaps that is why he skipped it in RTP!

The mridangam can be a very capricious instrument. Things can change with subtle aspects of the tuning, nAdham at any time. Also, the thoppi can be very finicky with changes in humidity, stage lights and temperature.

Vidwans like TS/UKS/KM are very particular about the sound (their instruments have a distinct patentable nAdham), so even if there is a subthreshold change in the tone they rotate mridangams.

Could someone explain here how to access these concerts on the web. For people away from Chennai, this offers a good opportunity to listen to some good concerts of one's choice. Thanks

These three concerts were webcast through http://www.tmkrishna.com. Charsur concerts were available through icarnatic.org. Keep a watch on the music festivals sub-forum on rasikas.org. I heard that some concerts will be webcast from Singapore Alapana Centre here later this month: http://www.alapana.org/

Wow - Sounds like a great concert. A varnam at the conventional opening slot too.
Enthati Kuluke-Kalyani-Tisra Chapu
Hey not so fast, Amigo :) - isn't the academy seized of the matter? :P

Yeah, I read that thread too but TMK said 'kalyAni rAgam, tisra chapu thAlam' with a knowing smile. They all had a hearty laugh then :geek:

Sorry for posting in bits and pieces:

Dhanyasi was very good. It lasted well over an hour including thani. Neraval was done at the last line, wrapping into the palavi: "candra kalAdhAriNI nIradavENI mInalOcanA brOva"

Neraval was done(!) for jagadAnandakArakA at 'Omkara panjara kIra purahara sarOjabhava kESava'

I could not wrap my head around this vEgavAhini. It didn't sound like chakravakam, though I have some songs alternately labeled as chakravAkam/vEgavAhini. The thukkadAs were all very nice.

What's the thing about 'tisra chapu'? I seem to have missed something.

He's done that a few times now.
