vEdapurIsvaram - dhanyAsi - sthalam?

Post by sankark »

http://www.carnatica.net/lyrics/mdcomp_eng.pdf - this contains a kriti vEdapurIsvaram (#329) in dhanyAsi. Which sthatla deity is this song on?

To my knowledge - there is a tripurasundari sametha vEdapurIsvarar in puducherry (pondicherry). There seems to be a vEdapuIsvarar in cheyyar but the ambigai name is [update]bAlagajAmbigai[/update]

sureshvv - thirukkazhukundram deity's name seems to be vEdagirIswarar. Two temples there - one is vEdagirIswarar (atop the hill) & another one for tripurasundari (at the base).

"Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar Keertanaigal" 2nd edition confirms my initial recollection

I can confirm that in the principal Siva temple here We have Vedapuriswarar and Thirupurasundari. The temple is more than 400 years old which was destroyed by fanatic missionnaries with the support of the wife of Dupleix where a church was built( which is still there today) and it was relocated in the present premises . Anandarangapillai's diary speaks about this. But i have no idea whether this song is about this deity.i do not know also whether in the body of the krithi there are oblique references to anything about Pondicherry.Nearby we have Bahour where a sanscrit University was there some 2000 years ago (Deivathin Kural) and I understand that this was the reason why tne name Vedapuri came to pondy. Ido not remember the name of the Deity of the very old siva temple there, though I have a vague recollection that it is vedapuriswarar. Maybe Pratyaksham bala may throw some light on this.

Ponbhairavi,
About the vEdapurISvarar in Puduchery:
Didn't BhArathi refer to vEdapuri in his kuDu kuDup pANDip pATTu--pudiya kONangi?

Arasi,
You are right about Bharathi.I am wondering whether there are older references from Dikshithar's time
