L-ji, thanks for the list.

I really enjoyed the young vidushi's concert. Her vocal music was uncompromisingly classical, while being tonally and aesthetically pleasant. Kum. Amritha has an excellent functional vocal range. Her voice maintains its richness and timbre during her forays into the lower octaves which is quite rare among lady artistes of the day. She handles the tara stayi with the same felicity. I was also struck by a certain sincerity in her performance.

The Bhairavi stood out. Her handling of sari evaramma was excellent; I was a bit disappointed that there was no neraval for this song. SS's kritis have extraordinary potential for neraval and I thought this was a missed opportunity. I felt that "Edayya Gati" was a bit too quick, the kalapramanam that she chose did not bring the natural gait of this beautiful Koteeswara Iyer vivadi piece. Her pallavi also did not involve any mathematical acrobatics, which was a good choice (since her concert here is sandwiched between NSG's and TNS's kutcheris).

Dr. Hemalatha was uniformly superb. Her returns were just right. Not only is she a very talented violinist, but a musicologist of considerable standing with encyclopedic knowledge of the Sampradaya Pradarshini among other things. She is also a very modest person and presents herself with an understated elegance, both on and off stage.

J Vaidyanathan lifted the concert to another level altogether. There is something to be said about a mridangist who understands vocal music well and plays with adequate sensitivity to the lyrical content, while not being restrained with the flourishes and fireworks at the appropriate spots. His tani in khanda jampai (5+1+2) was wonderfully structured. His nadham at the high shruti reminded me of Sri TK Murthy.

The short pieces before the concert's conclusion such as Kalki's pungkuyil kuvum and Krishna nee begane (in madhyama sruti) were just right. I was hoping for a javali, given Amritha's training with Rama Ravi, but unfortunately that did not happen.

The mangalam in Surutti by HH Chandrasekara Bharathi (?) was a very appropriate finale (Mangalam vara Rishyasringa nagara: tuned by RK Sriram kumar, I believe).

Overall, a wonderful concert by the young artiste. I wish her and her team much success on the rest of their sojourn in North America.
