Modern life style and constraints and hurdles in practicing
i am just wondering if anyone of you had gone through these hurdles and constraints. I had a few friends who had to give up on singing ( me inclusive) just because of living in appartments. It is particularly discouraging if you do not have people appreciating music around you. Singing is something you have to bellow out when you practice, otherwise it is just like humming and would not constitute a proper practice. It is easier for some instruments like violin where you can have a mute. Veena is low in volume per se. But, imagine if you want to practice nadhaswaram.. or mridhangam. Is there any arrangements we have to make , or should we be around the musicphillic people ( or live only in mylapore - (just in jest

Totally agree. It is particularly discouraging if you do not have people appreciating music around you.
Also agree. And since it is highly under-appreciated, I'd like to point out that it's also true of proper violin playing.Singing is something you have to bellow out when you practice, otherwise it is just like humming and would not constitute a proper practice.
Er?It is easier for some instruments like violin where you can have a mute.
Yes.Veena is low in volume per se.
I don't think mridangam, violin and proper singing are going to be so loud co-dwellers in the apartments will come and ask you to stop. But, imagine if you want to practice nadhaswaram.. or mridhangam.
nAdaswaram or tavil I can understand. I have no idea what they do for practice! But even for flute, an apartments has to be very badly constructed for co-dwellers to be significantly disturbed.

I play violin and I could practice even during the wee hours of the morning with a mute on it, when it is actually quite leaving nobody disturbed. I cannot imagine that with vocal. Actually , Srikanth, vocal is quite audible. My friend used to do something strange to keep himself from others listening. I will spill that at the end.

One learns, practices and sings out of love for music and I do not know of places in India where it is shunned. I do not know if neighbors will protest and ask one to stop. Do not sing expecting others and neighbors to come to you and appreciate it. That won't happen.

Is it? You mean that the many musicians who sit and hum/mutter, almost inaudibly, in front of their microphone/crutch actually sing at home?Singing is something you have to bellow out when you practice
I'm amazed! ]

I live in an apartment. when my son practices he closes all doors, windows (all are glass shutters hence a better soudn proof is achieved). I ensure that he opens his throat and sings in a loud voice. I also checked if the music(noise for others) is audible outside the room, and it was almost inaudible. apart from nadhaswaram and tavil maybe - we can still practice in our homes....... I had seen in many temples down south young children practicing nadhaswaram and tavil in a temple premises...even where there are no multi storied apartments and where the nadhaswaram is much appreciated...
