Mandolin U Shrinivas at Mylapore Fine Arts
This was the last of the concerts that I attended during this Chennai season and what a finale it was! Song list
1. Varnam in Vasantha
2. Siddivinayakam - Shanmukhapriya
3. Kamakshi - Yadukulakamboji
4. Panipati Sai (i hope i got this right) - Jhenkaradwani
5. Manavyalakinchara - Nalinakanti
6. RTP - Kharaharapriya with pallavi raagamaalika in Charukeshi, Behag, Saaramati and Kadanakuthuhalam followed by a very brisk thani
7. Bhavayami - Yaman kalyani
8. Alaipayude - Kaanada
9. Sai Bhajan
10. Thillana in Maand
HKV on violin was a lost soul when he had to play Jhenkaradwani, but was quick to recoverr for Kharaharapriya. The raagamaalika in the RTP had the US stamp on it!

thanks, Ravi. I learned something new today.
I had a number of telugu friends named Phanipati, Phanindra, Phani bhushan, Phani kumar even... and I was always wondering what the origin of the name was. Sadly all of them were just nicknamed "funny" in college

Punarvasu - you are correct - AdisESa - not vAsuki...
Ramesh, while phaNipati SAyI is vishNu, phaNi bhUshaNa is Siva....and phaNIndra is AdisESa

I have heard even celebrated musicians from Chennai sing 'paNihAra-bhakShitaM' instead of 'phaNihAra-bhUShitaM' in the famous Gowla kriti of Vasudevachar 'praNamAmyahaM'.
That surely brings a smile to me every time.

They probably were thinking of the paniyaaram they ate at the canteen and thinking that only Lord Ganesa could digest that stuff!Rsachi wrote:I have heard even celebrated musicians from Chennai sing 'paNihAra-bhakShitaM' instead of 'phaNihAra-bhUSitaM' in the famous Gowla kriti of Vasudevachar 'praNamAmyahaM'.

Good one, Harimau!
. In fact, first time I heard those words, I sought out a paniharam and ate it, just to find out what they were singing about.

Phana' means the hood. The one which has a 'phana' is therefore called 'phani'.
