Dear friend,

It is our pleasure to invite you to a sitar concert by Smt. Anupama Bhagwat, accompanied by Shri M.T. Aditya Srinivasan on the tabla, on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 4 p.m. at the Biotechnology Seminar Hall on the IIT Madras campus. Please feel free to spread the word and bring interested friends; this concert is not ticketed.

About the artists

'Surmani’ Anupama, a refreshingly versatile sitarist of the current generation, has performed to critical acclaim in India, USA/Canada, UK, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Brazil. One of the leading disciples of the world-renowned Pandit Shri Bimalendu Mukherjee, her sensitivity and erudition has taken her to the highest echelons of the modern genre, while remaining true to tradition. Anupama plays in the Gayaki style, a lyrical and subtly nuanced style modeled upon the human voice. She has imbibed the vigor that is a hallmark of the ImdadKhani Gharana: scintillating fast taans, mastery of the meditative alaap and brilliant fluency of melody (raag bhava), all the while maintaining her technical virtuosity. Anupama has been lauded by connoisseurs in India for her performances at prestigious festivals and venues such as the Ustad Amir Khan Smriti Samaroh (Indore), Swami Haridas Samaroh, Saptak (Ahmedabad), Sankat Mochan Samaroh (Varanasi), India International Center (New Delhi), Sangeet Research Academy (Kolkata) and Baba HarBallabh Samaroh-Vasant Utsav (Jalandhar). Anupama’s repertoire of performances world-wide span major universities and conservatories (Europe, USA, and Canada). She has appeared on Doordarshan TV, AIR, and several radio stations in USA.

Aditya, a Chennai-ite, was initiated into Carnatic music and western piano at 3. He began his training in Tabla under Rajesh Dhavle at the age of 8 and was the youngest to be awarded the CCRT Government of India scholarship. After training briefly under Chandrajit of the Farukhabad gharana, he is now under the tutelage of Pt. Yogesh Samsi (disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha Khan) of the Punjab gharana and also under Vidwan Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman for South Indian percussion. Aditya has been regularly performing and has accompanied top artistes such as Sriram Parasuram, Ranjani and Gayatri, Anupama Bhagwat, Manjusha Patil Kulkarni, Vedanth Bharadwaj and many others. He has also been involved in many fusion projects, one of which - Zinx - was adjudged the best band of South India in a band hunt organized by Oscar winner A.R.Rahman.
