21 Feb 2007. 6:30 pm

pieces that were rendered in full:

vAriti nIku - T
vEdAraNyEsvarAya namastE - MD
innaDa valE - T
nE pOgaDa kuNTE - T
dAkshAyaNi abhayAmbhikE - MD
E mani mATlADitivO - T
rAmacandrAya namastE - MD
karuNA nidi ilalO - SS
mInalOchani ambA - HMB

pieces that were rendered in part:

kaddanu vAriki - T
koluvamArE gadA - T
eTu dEyO - PD
srI subramaNyO - MD
E maNi miguLa - SS
rUpamu jUchi - varNam
pankajAksha - ST

Sri Srivatsa explained the way the compositions are structured and some very essential things about tODi.

I am unable to write them all and post here for want of time and some short-term-memory-loss

Existance of 30 Tyagaraja, 8 Dikshitar and 4 Shyama Sastri pieces was recorded.

vAriti is a kriti with complete emphasis on pUrvAnga. vEdAraNyEsvara is a kriti with complete emphasis on uttarAnga. The PD kriti and sri subramaNyO were rendered one after another to show similarities in phrases used and the usage of different gamakkas on the gandhAram. The innaDa valE kriti, on dharmAmbikA of thiruvaiyar was rendered to emphasise on the different structuring of the kriti. dAkshAyaNi, nE pogaDa and karUNa nidhi ilalO were rendered to show how the rAgam can be easily fitted to different types of tALam. rAmacandrAya again to show emphasis on how the kriti exploits all tAra sthAyi prayOgams.

Sri Srivatsa also explained the meanings of the kritis and the words and all the nuances in the sAhitya. It was nice lecture.

This is first of a series of Lectures of similar kind, Sri Srivatsa is planning to deliver.

Next programme is on 27th of March on sankarAbaraNam.

Bharat,

This is interesting - Other rendition of nE pogaDakunTE I have heard were in shubhapantuvarALi ( dEsya tODi)

Do you mean Purandara Dasa when you say PD? the sAhitya is not ringing a bell..

I hope you recover from your short-term memory loss and write more about the lec-dem ;)

Bharath - this lecdem sounds like a great one! Can you pls find out if recordings are being made available. I would be very interested in this series.

(This may be something the rasikas.org 'sabha' can explore as an alternative format to use once in a while. Truly a rasika's delight.)

ramakriya,
the kriti nE pogaDa kuNTE is rendered in shubha pantuvarALi in many schools and i have heard ARI and Seetha Rajan amongst, some others who render it in varALi. It is classified as dEsya tODi in the texts i have seen.

Dr. V V Srivatsa during the lecture did mention about rAgams like dEsya tODi, suddha tODi etc. He said singing with more emphasis on madhyamam is dEsya tODi. Singing without panchamam with suddha tODi. Not much of these rAgams exist in vogue these days and it is all part of the main tODi only.

The second piece you have seeked clarification, is indeed a dAsar dEvarnAmA. However, i might have not caught the sAhityam lines properly. It sounded very-much like srI subramaNyO mAm rakshatu's caraNam, rather, to quote Dr Srivatsa, the tune of this dEvarnAmA was exploited in the caraNam of the dIkshitar kriti with some very distinctively different usage of gAndhAram.

jayaram, i will find out, if and when i can...

One one hand, we bemoan the lack of recordings of the past/ history not being archived etc by us. But, when it comes to the current age when technology is accessible to almost all, isi t too hard to archive such sessions. After all, with many of the current day technology, we can even delete the stuff, if found unuseful. My sincere appeal to all, esp those who are organising such sessions, please record them, our future will thank you, and more that that - a lot of our music will be preserved. Manji was lost to bhairavi, so on and so forth, let us not loose more of our music. please!
