In any concert there should be a Vidwan/vidushi excellence. Shri OST fits in general (not with this concert alone)where he has a lovely throw , sangathis generally falling in place and a definite shruthi suddham. That fits into vidwan excellence . But there is also a vaggeyakkara excellence needed. Vageyakkara excellence is in general giving a feel to all rasikas where the spread of compositions and the language gives a kind of insight which is difficult to express but is indeed there.
Shri OST sang 7 numbers in trot all thyagaraja krithis .For me personally out of all vaggeyakkaras I place T in the highest pedastal , to that extent it was ok. But I could sense a few who were sitting next to me thinking was that all thyagaraja krithi concert . I did not enter the hall when mohanam was on as i was bit late. The first number to me was his nalinakanthi where there was an early excellence with really fast and lovely swaras. The mukhari alapana was excellent and the rendition of krithi continued in the same muse. THe swaras in mukhari could have been bit better . Certainy till this point every thing was lovely.
The he started singing 3 continous krithis of T without an iota of gap , no gap , no flask water break , no finger messaging time for mrudangist/violinist . The first Kanthamani and a jump to the krithi was very nice and then at a point where he jumped to anuragamulanEni in saraswati The 2nd jump to asaveri was nice but I missed bit more kozhaivu in the krithi. At that point it was somewhat like a thiruvayaru aradhana concert where artist are just given 15 mins.
The sahana was really good , bit fast in alapana but brigas were sparkling. The krithi and the swaras were indeed along the lines of successful sampradaya suddham. The last three were all thamizh krithis , the shreeranjani kana vendamo is one of his favourite to close with in tukkadas and I have also heard his kambOdhi of surajananda . The last I think was in kApi nAle Nalla nAl punniyam seiyum. My mobile watch was close to 9pm and he wrapped the concert.
The violinist Delhi sundarrajan played very well from mukhari onwards he is slowly getting his 90's glory which is still not yet there. The percussion artist were very good , for few sangathis in nalinakanthi and somewhere in sahana i could sense narayanan was going bit faster than the vocalist . The ghatam artist Sivaramakrishnan was wonderful and his strikes were minimal and excellent . The tani was very good.
One wished OST to sing atleast a neraval (I generally expect RTP but OST has gone in public and stated he prefers not to sing RTP- to that extent i did not have a pallavi expectation).I am assuming there was no neraval before I came in mohanam. Without a single neraval was indeed a disappointment.
Overall a very good concert for close to 2 hours.

It was the same case the other day atIIFS, German Hall. I mean mostly Thyagaraja krithis. Concert with all Thyagaraja krithis can never be called surfeit of ..., nevertheless few krithis in a 2.5 hour concert from other trinity adds to listening pleasure.

Thanks for your nice review Rajesh. Any concert of OST will be all Thyagaraja Kritis. Even the Mangalam will be Nadupai- A kriti that deserves a heavy treatment.
