Malladi Brothers- MA -26.12.13

Post by grsastrigal »

It is a different experience attending Malladi Brothers followed by Abhishek raguram
Good experience.

In another thread, Abhishek Raguram’s concert is being reviewed. The fact, early morning there was queue of some 400 perople for this. Great going !!

• rAgeshree- nandaka karananda- Annmacharya
• pAhimAm pAhimAm param- jOnpuri-Narayana teerthar
• Guru vandanam- usual sloka..
MallAdi gave a neat performance. Each and every kriti was rendered so well. They are top of the duos as on today. Once again proved by their performance.
Delhi S= was bad on that day. His violin did not give proper support. He finished karaharapriya short. Surprisingly messy.
Tani was good.
Another memorable concert

It turns out that I completely agree with our Sastrigal on this one :)
rAgamAlika pallavi in Abheri, (not known), lalitha, yaman kalian.
The second rAgam was manOranjani.

Another thing to add about this concert. Palladam Ravi on the mridangam was just superb! Had never heard him till this concert. A top-class vidwan. I wish he would get more prime time slots.

Palladam Ravi has been playing at least for one concert at the Academy for the last couple of years at the Senior slot.

The conundrum is would you as a musician like the crowds though you know that they are treating you as the fill-in while they are waiting for the star attraction?

Why didn't they reverse the sequence and have Abhishek take the 4:15pm slot so that the sheeple can have their fill of fodder and let people like me listen to the Malladi Brothers in peace?

I was being continuously disturbed by sheeple who were trying to find seats, moving out and back in after bio-breaks or tiffin at the canteen.

Excellent music, totally spoiled by The Clueless.

I SMSed a niece who was at another end of the hall if she was staying for the Abu Sheikh concert. Her reply was: Pls, no Sheik. Seems that all NRIs aren't sheeple.

PS. I gave up my ticket and seat to a Chennai-resident sheeple. I was glad to.

Chennai Sheeple are NOT clueless.

I do not attend the season for a similar fare every year. I was happy that the M Bros had taken up raga Kantamani and elaborated the same.

Are we not tired of the short list of the big six and long list of the 20 ragas that we hear again and again?

I heard Kharaharapriya from the duo two years ago -- nice to hear it again but was happier to hear Kantamani! Like I have BJ's Kharaharapriya about 3/4 years ago at the same location, was happier to hear suddha saarang. And there is Youtube, Charsur to bring out unlimited and limited editions -- which I can hear at home!

Music season is supposed to also be an "Annual Conference and Concerts." I look for reinterpretations -- typical phrases, yes I need this to identify the raga (this is my limitation not the artist's). Atypical phrases -- this is the creativity of the musician. When this appeals to the rasika and is repeated -- this becomes a new typical phrase.

Music like language grows -- the English language (inspite of all of its ridiculous phonetics) grows because it borrows a lot from other languages -- an RSVP, sine die, curry, mulagutany soup, ...

Most musicians have a new fare that they bring to the season -- like one brings a new paper to present at a conference.

When I listen to Sanjay -- sing in Suddha Saveri -- a flighty durga and the whole experience gives me a "feel good," why not indulge the musician?

At AR's concert there was a HUGE young crowd -- for me this is very important -- if he is able to keep the sabhas full with youngsters in their teens with a 1/2 hour alaap, giving a performance with only 4 pieces -- hats off to him and Carnatic Music will live on.

I am tired of seeing oldies like me at the concert -- with the canteen ensuring that we get our "pala agarams" between 6.45-7.00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays!:-(

I remember there was a void in CM during the late 80s and early 90s. The arrival of Ravikiran, Sanjay, TMK, Shashank, Sowmya, Bombay Jayashree, Malladi Bros (order not chronological or complete) changed the landscape of CM. The important point about these musicians -- they have all had multiple gurus -- they brought new fare to CM --most importantly they worry about their voice culture. Their students are not replicas of themselves -- cases in point -- Prasanna V, Vignesh I. And most of them are researchers in their own right -- there is a quest for exploration, innovation, collaboration, … I am tired of hearing the following words "sowkhyam, classicism, musicality, traditional, …"

Harimau seems to be the only voice of dissent re AR....... I could not listen to him this season. But I know some friends who beat a retreat after about an hour. And they had enough company. So I'm just curious.......

Ravi is a disciple of his father mridanga vidwan, Palladam Ramachandra Rao.

Ravi's great grandfather was the flute maestro Sangeetha Kalanidhi Palladam Sanjeevi Rao.

Well, if it were not for chennai sheeple, there would be no CM. Go back to the late 80s and early 90s --- you will know what I mean. To classify further, it is the NRI chennai sheeple from CA or upstate New York :))
