The late Smt. Lakshmi Shankar

Post by rshankar »

Smt. Lakshmi Shankar, Hindustani vocalist of the Patiala gharAnA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakshmi_Shankar), passed away on December 30th 2013. She was also the mother of Smt. Viji Subramaniam, the late wife of Sri L. Subramaniam. As Kumari Laksmi Shastry, she was one of the first Brahmin girls to learn bharatanATyam, and it was as a dancer in Sri Uday Shankar's troupe that she met her future husband, the late Sri Rajendra Shankar.
Condolences to her family and friends, and her disciples. May her soul RIP.
I hope that Varsha will post a few representative tracks of this enormously multi-talented artist.

Sad loss. Saw her once and what a sweet melodious voice and unassuming person. She was actively singing even in her eighties.

Punarvasu, it appears that she lived in CA. She was using her CM roots to compose unique and beautiful music for local bharatanATyam dancers, from what I have heard.

She lived in Los Angeles and has traveled to the Bay Area for performances.

Here's a beautiful write up.

What a loss!
There is this amazing track of Lakshmi Shankar's, accompanied by Chaurasia and L Subramaniam, that I always turn to in moments of weakness: supney mein aayen, preetham saiyan.

The world has lost a true gem. RIP, Lakshmi-ji.

L.S. while quite proficient in Carnatic Music PROFESSIONALLY PERFORMED CLASSICAL HINDUSTHANI MUSIC & WAS A WELL KNOWN PERFORMER. Actually in the sixties-she is the sister in law of Ravi Shankar- she lived in NYC Area where I had arranged some concerts for her & when R.S. used to go away for his concerts I was lucky to arrange things for her. CLEVELAND V.V.SUNDARAM arranged many concerts esp. in CLEVELAND among other places for her.AN UNBELIEVABLY TALENTED ARTIST BUT AN EVEN GREATER HUMAN BEING SHE WAS THE EPITOME OF GRACE. She was VERY SHARP & HIGHLY COMPETENT TILL THE VERY END. She moved to CA when R.S. moved there and the Music Society based in L.A. was a key school for propagation of H.M. & still is. She was the moving force along with R.S. VKV

I take it that you meant the 'music circle'.

I heard about L.S. passing away through an email alert from them.
They have been wanting to have a pushpanjali for their founders Ravi Shankar and Harihar Rao. Lakshmi Shankar had agreed to come out of retirement and perform in honor of the founders on Jan 25th. But I got an email from them a couple of weeks back that Lakshmi Shankarji would not be able to sing at that occasion due to health reasons. Now we know it was quite serious.

Lakshmi Shankar belonged to Patiala gharana, but at her concerts in South she was asked to sing mostly bhajanṣ. She opted to sing thumris as they were considered to be more appropriate to a female singer than khayals!

Some of the renderings of Lakshmi Shankar are here...

Some of her Meera Bhajans are at You Tube..

The Violin Trio L Shankar, L Subramaniam and L Vaidyanathan are world famous.

What is their background? I think they belong to Iyer community. What is their sub-sect?

Can anyone tell?

Thanks

The violin trio's father Lakshminarayanan was the eldest brother of Ramnad Krishnan.

She was born in 1926 and grew up in mambalam but learnt thumri and kayal. Wow.

Does anyone about "the specifics of her voice was featured in the movie gandhi" that is mentioned ?
