Re: Sandeep Narayan@Aasthika samAjam on Jan 20th,2014
Sandeep always exudes an extremely high quotient of exuberance .His exuberance was matched with his general vocal throw and his voice indeed is consistent with no sagging moment . If there was a glitch, the glitch was quite prominent , it was not a glitch in the mic but in general for at least one number where his music just bordered on a very high decibel sound.
Sandeep started exceptionally well and the cittaranjani krithi had a really nice diction . tanum anisham was the phrase he sang instead of tanumanisham , his cittaranjani swaras were very apt and gave a flying start . The next alapana in ravichandrikaa is quite rare as many do not sing alapana.I enjoyed it and I guess certain overlap with nattaikurinji should be there is what I assume for a ravichandrika , any way he sang very well with its chittaswaras. niravadi sukhadA indeed came out well
The vilambit could have been a tad slower but still I enjoyed his reetigowlai krithi nannu vidachi. His voice gave a right emote to this lovely ragam reetigowlai, possibly a little more alankaram in a slower mode in lines like kodanda rama , pattabhi rama would have been more special.
The rare melakartha raga gangeyabhooshani was next and it was well presented , his voice power was indeed like his guru sanjay and with a general dose of higher creativity in swaras the ganeya bhooshani was really excellent. The first down hill bit started with a devagAndhari filler - out of all devagAndharis this vinaradha is quite fast, but i could not get a very arresting aural rendition of the krithi.
Atleast till this point sandeep's music though had a slightly high share of volume kind of not bothered me at all as his exuberance was so likable. When pantuvarAli came it gushed with such a force , the alapana was definitely enjoyable , really fast brighas and an orientation to packed sangathis is a music that i generall cherish vs a sowkhyam squat. Despite a personal tolerance of higher volume as the raga was pantuvarAli , i felt it was really too loud when krithi started. The heaviness in volume kind of banged my head . The neraval and swaras was louder almost a really high decibel tussle where his musical ideas never settled as it banged my ears. I could enjoy few creative sangathis in swaras for PV, but still overall felt the best when the krithi got over. I did not concentrate that much on tani .
The last two tukkadas came out very well - the bhAgeshri was the only number away from T .It gave a great contrast from telugu to thamizh and bharathiyar's lyrics always have highest emotive connection, the last utsava sampradaya krithi of T in yk kambOdhi could have been a bit more slower - but still enjoyed it . Sandeep indeed gave a great finish in tukkadas.
The violinist did match well ,IIRC for reetigowlai there was a shade of roughness. Overall BAK is a violinist to be watched out . Arjun Ganesh with his fast fingers could have purposely played with little more sparseness for atleast few songs . But Arjun was the youth who wanted to give the same punch as sandeep. Anirudh played with a nice kanjira azhuttam .
The overlap of sandeep and sanjay is almost there for each and every song , but personally i like it as i generally dont bother about overlap of guru and sishya as long as good things are there for sishya. One thing that is extremely prominent with Sandeep is his voice has a significantly better quality . The hall is not the best of halls in acoustic setup , possily if Sandeep and Arjun Ganesh had that in mind , the concert could have been a notch higher.
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 5 mins.

Indeed a power packed and energetic concert from start to finish.
I felt the loudness could have been more due to the sound settings in the hall.
Yes, there were a couple of moments when Sandeep's anga-cheshTais too reminded me of his guru - especially the conclusive clap of the taaLam-putting-hands on the mridangist's face when he finished a song
Thoroughly enjoyed the concert.
