Sanjay Subrahmanyan in Nanganallur, 28/01/2014

for Sri Thyagaraja Sangeetha Samajam, venue Ranjani Hall

MR Gopinath - violin
Arjun Ganesh - mridangam
Trichy Murali - ghatam

vanajAksha (varnam) - rItigowlai - k ata - vInai kuppaiyer (5th or 6th time hearing this one in the last 7 - 8 weeks)
IvasudhA - sahAnA - Adi - T
raghunAyaka nIpAda - hamsadhwani - Adi - T (rs@raghunAyakA). fantastic 10 - 12 round of swarams landing at sa. Are there phrases that can give mohanamish feel in this?
angArakam AshrayAmyaham - surAti - rUpakam - MD
bhUlOka kumAri hE amrta nAri - ranjani - Adi - mahAkavi subramania bhArathiyAr (r). this was not in the usual tune/mettu that Sowmya sings. A different one. And so clear pronunciation and enunciation of words :)
enna puNNiyam seidhAyO - husEni - m cApu - sivarAma yOgi. just sketched the ragam for 2 - 3 phrases, about 5 - 10 seconds of worth. I was overjoyed that I am going to listen an huseni alapanai. alas, it was not so. jumped to the song immediately. This is kind of strange. His single phrase husEni was so good and brought the raga bhavam to the fore in such a short phrase and made me go ahA, but the entire sahanA didn't evoke that kind of raga bhavam or a ahA moment for me.
enduku peddala - sankarAbharanam - Adi - T (rns@vEda sAstra, tani). at times I felt he was playing to the gallery (ta ta ta, tu tu tu, elooooooooooogated round of kalpana swarams), explosive tani, though not hard on the ears.

at that point the organizer started a talk and he was heard lamenting, "I shouldn't be doing this and let him sing more, but still have to talk" but I left anyways - time, travel :( By that time it was already 2:30 hours of good to very good music.

I don't feel that the "ta ta ta tu tu tu" etc. is directed particularly to the gallery as much as it is part of his own "exhuberant" interpretation. Sometimes Sankarabharanam needs a good pounding :-)

Agree. Would attribute this partly to the fact that the sahana kriti was part of the "warmup" while the huseini was sung while well into the concert.
