T V Shankaranarayanan presented an energetic concert in front of an eager audience. The dhanyasi kriti was new to me and was beautiful.
This semi-open venue clearly needs help with acoustics and listening to music here was not very pleasant. Was wondering if a mike less concert would have been better if the percussionists were sensitised. This is a dedicated sabha which holds regular programmes and does not have huge resources. This situation is not unique and someone needs to come up with a good low cost solution that suit such spaces and elevate the concert experience. The contrast between listening to a Pt. Venkatesh Kumar concert the previous day with a decent sound system and his tremendous shruti alignment and this concert with several percussionists and bad acoustics was stark.

For the first time I heard Ardhanareeshwaram from TNS , apart from the above names , I have heard abhishek and suryaprakash singing this number . There is a popular opinion that MSG has played exceptionally well and is known for this song .kssr wrote:There is an Ardhanaareeswaram in Kumudakriya. Just curious to know if it was rendered as a major item with R,N,S or just a short piece.

@kssr, I have heard TVS rendering this from his 1975 concert tour of the US; should be easy to find it. Just the kriti in his typical tempo, no R/N/S.
@ganeshkant, Heartening to see the veteran loosening the strings around his repertoire. It is interesting to note that he is likely not including new items but revisiting the ones he has rested for a couple of decades!

At the BRR Sabha concert in Mumbai recently, TVS sang an excellent Abhogi ragam (haven't heard that from him earlier), although the song was the familiar Sabhapati (which definitely Mani Iyer has sung often). But the raga alapana was leisurely and very refreshing indeed.
As far as energy levels and enthusiasm go, TVS can give any youngster a run for his/her money. He kept everyone (i.e. audience and accompanying artistes) on their toes during the neraval and kalpana swarams of all songs.
Only, the amplification was WAY too loud for comfort. Almost unbearable, except during the raga alapanas.
