Shivaratri musical treat

Post by Rsachi »

Yesterday was a special Shivaratri.
First was Gayatri Girish with her Karpaga Manohara in Malayamaruta on ARTery.
Then MSS on Podhigai singing the wonderful Nadanamakriya JCW "Shiva Shiva Shiva Bho". But best of all a wonderfully uplifting Jog in the best of Dhrupad tradition by two unknown singers, one of them visually impaired*, and holding hands and singing to Shiva's ultimate joy - Saptak on DD Bharati
Image. I found out their names later:
Sushri Amita Sinha Mahapatra- Dhrupad
Sushri Aliya Rasheed* -Dhrupad
Shri Akhilesh Gundecha- Pakhawaj
And two beautiful ladies on the tambura (one seen in photo)

Sachi,

These immensely talented singers have trained under the Gundecha bandhu. Alia is from Lahore, and Amita is from Kolkata. They sang at the Bangalore Alliance Francaise a couple of months ago. They seemed to have trained together for a long time, and enjoy a good synergy, with amazing coordination. Very competent, very impressive.

Yes, Keerthi. That they came and performed in KempegowdaOoru and I missed it is sad.
Yesterday they sang Jog which is special - the surprising cusps in the scale give many an Ahha moment. That lovely tambura lady was responding every time with the same delight as we were.
Aalia with her wide open but unseeing eyes symbolised the third eye of Ajna chakra - she was in communion with Shiva. And the Mahapatra lady was holding her hand, with close squeezes etc. All adding to a wonderful musical union of minds. The way they sang fast taans was so nice. We felt a loss when the programme was cut in the middle. The ways of DD Bharati are inscrutable and we will surely find them on air sometime hopefully.
