A unique first of its kind cultural event with 14 exciting contests!
A day-long festival bringing together Indian music, dance and culture under one roof!
Concept 1: Tiny Tot Talent- A unique traditional fancy dress contest
• For kids aged 8 and under
• Each participant must dress up as a Carnatic musician, composer or dancer
• Each participant gets time to perform or say a few lines pertaining to the celebrity they are dressed up as.
Concept 2: Tribute to Legends
• Audio visual presentations on your favorite musicians, composers or dancers
• Participants to make multimedia presentations, 4 mins each
Concept 3: Carnatic Explorations
• 20-min mini interactive kutcheris by exceptional local talents
Concept 4: Kreativ 2014
Ragamalika/Raga Repertoire - an interactive game
• Three boxes—‘popular’, ‘rare’, ‘very rare’--with 10 raga names each will be placed.
• Contestants pick one raga name and hand it to the quiz master
• Song is played in that raga
• You can identifythe raga (or) sing the arohanam–avarohanam (or) a few phrases and lines from compositions. Points will be awarded based on your level.
Swara Jam
• For kids: Swara pattern completion
o a pattern, eg, s r g p g m (rupaka tala) will be given and asked to create the rest of the varisai
• For adults: a theme will be given,
o eg, create patterns of 5 swaras in Hamsadhwani to sing for Vathapi Ganapathim in 90 seconds. Come up with as many permutations and combinations!
Guess the Krithi
• Sing a random line from a song, participants get 10 seconds to identify the pallavi line, raga, tala and composer.
On the spot Pallavi
• A Pallavi line will be given. Participants should answer basic questions on Pallavi singing.
Concept 5: Mr. and Ms.Carnatic Voice of Bay Area
• For the first time based on Common parameters of a singer like voice range, stamina, modulation and fluency will be tested and graded accordingly. Open to amateurs and professionals.
Bhakthi Star Contest
• Bhajans, Slokas, Viruttams on Lord Rama
• Small songs and keerthanams on Lord Rama
Concept 6: Carnatech
A multimedia quiz on Carnatic music and dance involving registered teams and audience participation
Concept 7: Karnatik Kaleidoscope
Rangoli/Kolam and Golu contest relating to Carnatic music, dance and bhakti
• Participants can choose themes based on instruments, composers, musicians and dancers to make exhibits and rangoli
• For Golu, exhibits like Thyagaraja's house, raga theme park etc would be welcomed.
Concept 8: Cultural Art gallery
Display of rare photographs, old newspaper clippings, charts and models by students.
• Charts on melakarta, mudras, Karanas, musicians and dancers etc.
• Miniature models of instruments/dance poses
Concept 9: Pechu Kucheri - A musical Patti Manram
• Is it easy for students in the US to become professional musicians?
• Does technology aid or hinder the learning and teaching of Carnatic music?
• Should Carnatic music become more rasika friendly?
Other topics can be suggested
Concept 10: Carnatic Choir, Tala Tharangini and Vadya Vrinda
Group presentation by Bay area kids of songs like Shakti Sahita Ganapatim, Santatam Pahimam, geethams, swarajathis, varnams, etc.
Vadya Vrinda- instrumental ensemble
Tala Tharangini- group percussion ensemble
Open to singers, instrumentalists and percussionists
Please register in advance for slots.
Concept 11: Sangitha Shiksha - An educative lecture demonstration
Concept 12: Sangitha rasanubhava - Ugadi & Ram Navami special by Carnatica Brothers
Concept 13: Natyanubhava -thematic dance presentations
Concept 14: Bhakti and Namasankeertanam
Group presentation by local schools/teachers of bhajans, utsava sampradaya kritis, namasankeerthanam, etc.
Valedictory Function: Honoring of teachers, participants and winners with gifts, medals and certificates.
Note: Event is open to all. Entry free for rasikas as spectators. Voluntary donations accepted.
Participation can be individual or as a team
Entry fee for one/more contests : 25 USD per individual/ team
Certificates and medals will be given to all participants in addition to gifts for winners.
