The Padam Popsicle - Carnatic Coke

ARUNA SAIRAM jams at Coke Studio with Ram Sampath.
Both hugely talented musicians.

Only for me it was a bit of a shock, as I have just started getting a taste of the deeply classical idiom of Padam after watching that Sowmya lecdem.

Parallel story:the world's most famous brand Coke is thinking of pulling out its recent ads because they all seem to suggest Coke is a kind of drug=substance abuse.
Adweek: In the way the tagline, "You're on," and logo are positioned, the brand's new ads seem to refer to drug use—appearing to spell out the phrase "You're on coke."

Payyada sung in Mayamalavagoula to the accompaniment of western instruments!
With occasional alien notes in the chords.
I wonder what this experiment tries to prove!

Clever intro to the video, 'A song that was originally sung by courtesans of yore, the Devdaasi's, Paiyada is sensual, seductive & full of yearning.' So, purists questioning necessity of doing 'fusion' for heavyweight Padams should not even think on those lines.

Why the Hindustani style singing?

The whole thing sounds sorta seductive. Start of Carnatic music desecrating...

Thank you madam Aruna Sairam for holding out the torch for such beginnings.

A few more I stumbled upon in this "genre"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kHb8tJXd5Q ( aigiri nandini - A.R. Rahman )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8kG3EE087M ( Shiva Thandava Stotram )

This fusion thing for religious hymns and songs seem to be taking root. I saw Giri trading folks talking about such CDs in a matter of fact manner and not as anything new.

Payyadda padam is in Nadanamakriya ragam. Are you telling me that the padam was sung in MMG instead.

Kokilam,
Anil Srinivasan and Gurucharan have recorded this padam in their CD some years ago, haven't they?

Yup. And the title of that CD came from a word from this padam

Aruna Sayiram's music is a strict NO NO for me. This decision I have taken after hearing a couple of her concerts - not out of any prejudice. A couple of days back I got one concert titled Aruna Sayiram Live concert 1982. Just to see how she had sung in 1982 ( I have already heard about her transition) I heard that concert and it was a concert of unbelievably high standard in exact Brinda style. And the songs- it started with Sumasayaka. The main was Ninnuvina sukhamugana in Thodi and padams and javalis included. That lifted my image about her slightly.Thud! I happened to see this thread. My original impression about her music further went down to the adalapaadalam.

Now, the snake in MahishAsura's hand is asking him: why is the one who inspired Sachi's animated icon, the sociologist is missing here? :-o

Of course, it becomes Nadanamakriya only when Mayamalavagoula is sung in the Madhyamasruthi.

In the name of fusion a whole new generation of singers have emerged long before Aruna ji started this. Hopefully Pure Music survives as Mother Nature is a bigger preservationist than anyone of us. But taking the raga and applying it, is agreeable to me in this Linguini slokam. To be honest I liked the Linguini better!!!

The first word that came to my mind when I heard this was 'Horrible'. But the clever introduction induced my anger and thus the spewing of more words.

This morning paper had an article on an album of songs praising our Jaya mommy:-) and another great musician, Nithyashree has contributed to the singing... /:) . Wonder where Carnatic musicians are headed. :ymsigh:

Heard this one yesterday from youtube. Am not sure about other fusion initiatives but this one was not bad.
The background music was gelling smoothly with Aruna Sayiram's singing and i don't think there was any rock or heavy metal type music.
In no way was it 'Horrible'.

ennishTa mUruthi uDapi krishna banda!

Thank you Sachi for this antidote. Loved it!

The visuals (should I say the lighting) is not something new in the original clip of yours. We are fed an excess of it even in programs of CM contests for youngsters.

I suppose it was the unexpectedness of listening to peyyAda the way it was presented. One may take words like pining, passion and so on and present it in an entirely different context. It's the context which bothers us then.

As others have pointed out, it's a quieter version of fusion than many that I have heard.

Moving with the times, participants in popular programs have started flaunting colors and frills, and even a music program which we see now looks like a grand dance performance, in the attire of some very classical musicians who judge them. No gripes here, but how time changes modes and manners!

Regrets, yes :)

I don't have any complaint, since this was done in MTV studio... Thankfully, the song chosen wasn't trinity, and there is no spiritual content anyways !!

She does bringout the bhava :D Apt emotion for MTV :)
