Writer of the poem Sakhi Prana.

Post by pvasudevan »

Does anyone know who wrote the poem Sakhi Prana. I know the composition is by Dharmapuri Subbaraya Iyer, but I am looking for the original writer and period when this was written - thanks

What do you mean? The composer, Dharmapuri Sri Subbaraya Iyer is a vAggEkakArar - i.e., he wrote the lyrics and set it to music as well. And if you look, you'll find the back story on how and why he composed this.

Does it help..

Lots of Artists rendered this..

It is understood that Dharmapuri Subbarayar composed the javali ‘Sakhi Prana’ in admiration of Veena Dhanammal’s art, and when she heard this composition, she responded by saying this song was much more worthy than gold and diamonds.

Once Dharmapuri Subbarayar had to go away to his native place to settle certain personal things. He promised Dhanammal that he would be back soon. But it was more than six months before he returned. Meanwhile Dhanammal had to vacate her house because of debts. Subbarayar was saddened by this and in remorse he composed 'sakhi prANa'. In it he says that he had promised to return soon but had not kept his promise. This is the background of this javali.

When I requested at old sangeetham.com shishya provided the meaning of the song;
The context is where the lady pours out her heart with jealousy and sadness to her friend because her lover has deserted her for another woman.

P: sakhi prANA sakhuDu iTu jEsenE
Oh friend, look what the love of my life did!!

C1: idigO vaccedanani hitavugA mATalADi
he said very sweetly that he would return shortly
aladAni niDu (nIda (?)= literally shade or figuratively house)cErenE
he went to 'her' house

2: nana (I am not sure of this word, I assume it is to do with manmatha)vilutuni= holder of the bow (manmatha has a bow of flowers) pOrulaku pilacitE
when I called him for romantic clashes

vADu anarAni mATalADanE
he said me words which he was not supposed to say (verbally abused me)
3: munu nannu kalasi marmamulerigina
the Lord who was with me earlier and knew all my secrets (read as my likes and dislikes)

dharmapuri vAsuDu maracenE
the one who lives in dharmapuri, forgot everything
Ithink there is more personal elements to it than what Ravisri has posted..

Yes. But not for public consumption. The song was triggered by the actual incident of Subbarayar not being able to return to Madras as he promised to Dhanammal. More because of the fact that Dhanammal had to vacate her house because she had fallen into one of her bad times.
