Re: Brinda Manickavasagam@kapAli temple on May 18th,2014
The old timers have had their share of great concerts in mylai kapaleeshwarar temple with legends like madurai mani participating . In the last 10 to 12 years where I am following concert circuits in chennai , I have not seen that many concerts in mylapore temple . There is usually one thamizh calendar month like panguni or chithirai where about 5 to 7 artists sing each year , but rest of the calendar years I have not spotted concerts atleast in the hindu paper engagement column. It is a welcome change to have concerts even in vaikasi , and I could see about 7 artists lined up with brinda manickavasagam being one during this week .
I have personally not heard big temple concerts(like parthasarathi, kapali etc) at chennai and this is the first time i am hearing a concert .May be this whole concert festival is sponsored by govt of tamilnadu or whatever , nevertheless it was nice to spot about 7 artists lined up in the month of vaikasi at mylapore.
brinda kept up with a high dose of thamizh krithis which certainly should have given her more mileage considering many rasikas are floating crowd types. There is a mantapam built and I could spot atleast 350 seated for this concert, certainly this temple is a great crowd sourcing spot.
BRinda a student of many teachers with vidushi suguna varadachari being her most prominent guru. She did show definite touches of paddantara depth of musiri-suguna . Her start in nattai was a lovely viruththam - ulagalAm uNarndhu with her voice reaching comfortable pitch ,it was lovely. The contrast of viruththam sequing to a MD nattai sanskrit krithi, parameshwara jagadeeshwara did kalaikattufy the concert.
BEgaDa azhuttam did somewhat pep up well for the second number but did not keep me that glued . Her submain keeravani was presented excellently. 10 years before I heard this rare super extraordinary keeravani krithi karunakaranE by balaji shankar who took it to himalayan heights . Few months back i heard for the first time in a live concert when Abhishek sang and i was thinking then why cant there be a neraval anywhere for this krithi. Brinda sang a nice neraval that was short in duration but she did very well with a real dash of near perfect swaras .
There were two fillers vilambit sahana and the rhythmmic sudda saveri both had an excellent thamizh diction and she sang with azhuttam. The paddandhara of Suguna varadachari - musiri came in full force anchored heavily in emote in kambOdhi . There was a nice kambodhi alapana but the krithi rendition of tiruvadi charanam was wonderful . The usual adutthu vanthu ennai neraval had so much of musiri typecast sangathis , she took time and sang with a heavy dose with emote resting a little more in between phrases . Musiri bani was indeed there . The preceding tiruvadi charanam krithi was quite quick and I thought her swaras were well done with a real strong layam focus with a real varied pattern not mimicking the usual jeeva pidis of repeated kambodhi.
The shurutti was a bit of mixed bag , I missed more gamakams in this intensely carnatic raga and the composition rendering was bit too cautious. There was a brief strategic timeout at the end of shuruti as the preceding dieties were taken in the night procession- it was a 08:30 pm procession . I heard a gambeera nattai mallari from nayana vidwans that got louder and louder with brinda shruthi fading out. The last thillana of pahadi is ghazalish as the ragam is pahadi but I am just beginning to like this raga more and more . Her alankarams in few lines like mahadeva was awesome and she did full justice to lalgudi thillana. The finish in abhirami anthadi was lovely she sang atleast 6 verses and ending with one of the most popular krithi karpagamE did give that extra religious hallucination for every rasika.
Vv Srinivasa rao played well most of the time. I felt during the vocal alapana of keeravani he had could have given more vocal space . shertalai anandakrishnan played wonderfully and his mrudangam shruthi did settle in a zone of excellence. HIs tani was a usual one - nothing extraordinary.
Brinda has to focus a bit more in mel kalam sangathis, she attempts but her pitch was not that steady. I do know that she went to Us few years back to complete her higher studies , I am not sure if she has returned back to chennai to pursue music or if she has come back on vacation. There is a lot of azhuttam in her music and she comes with really creative ideas .
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 5 mins.

Its nice to know that more temple concerts are being held. I attended a concert in kapaleeswar temple and it is an experience I will never forget. I hope to attend more temple concerts during other months too in namma chennai. A divine experience indeed !

I did not go to this concert, but attended her concert at RS Hall a couple of days previously.
I got to see her in her own concert in a Besant Nagar temple season a few months back, and, from chatting to her mother at the time, I understand that the answer to your question is that she is absolutely committed, with her family's enthusiastic backing, to a life in music. I think we can expect to see her here for the foreseeable future.
Returning to her RS Hall concert: it was outstanding, and I felt the progression from a "mere" very good to utterly captivating as the songs progressed. It was one of those rare concerts where, knowing that the kalpana swaras for the main must come to an end soon, I had the desire that they should go on forever.
She is often to be seen playing tambura for Suguna Varadachari. One can see a different dimension to the music just by watching her face!I am not sure if she has returned back to chennai to pursue music or if she has come back on vacation. There is a lot of azhuttam in her music and she comes with really creative ideas .
