Shaolin Master at Chitthirai

Post by Rsachi »

Here's a story.
King Mahendra Varman invites the celebrated Shaolin Master from the Temple of the Upper Mountains to come and perform at Madurai during the festival. It is a musical Shaolin show. Sri Dikshitar is the guest of honour.
The Shaolin master presents the famous Meenakshi Memudam. Remember Meenakshi was a fiery-tempered princess who went and challenged Shiva in battle (and he is the guru of the Shaolins).

The master's rendition is full of aerial acrobatics, fire throwing, and constant clang of shiny knives that produce eye-blinding sparks. When it is finally done, and yes, the song is properly dusted, Dikshitar is requested for comment. He shakes his head in utter disbelief, as if he has witnessed a 10000 cracker string burst at close quarters.

I am talking of Abhishek Raghuram's Sangeet Sammelan concert last night. I even recorded it on my tiny Walkman:

Ananthakrishnan of the Parur bani acquitted himself well, despite the occupational hazard of a couple of squeaks while accompanying the Shaolin Master. The mridangam vidwan, B. Natesan, gave a proper thrashing to his kuchi mridangam and it felt like, paraphrasing Rajiv Gandhi, "teri naani yaad ayegi". The tani with Guruprasanna was in full Shaolin style and enjoyable.
The Khamas LGJ tillana was great... could wake up the dead indeed.

Conflict of Interest:
Some of us have formed a group who call Abhishek Raghuram as God. The group tries to never miss his concerts and travels long distances. Age and mental weakness prevent me from joining the festivities regularly, but you know what, everything needs a thorough dusting once in a while at least, for our own wellbeing. Abhishek does it. Day after day. Song after song.

God Bless.

Yes it just fantastic nearly 60 minutes bliss and of course the thillana was class My only regret is that AIR 1 hour concert is just meaningless, it should have been atleast 90 minutes to listen more than one song.

Gosh, Sachi!
Just when I was wondering about you, and wondering about the house concert you mentioned, with no mic???

Fire and action...Your pyrotechnics with words and graphics! Though we know it's all about the great Sheik who certainly would have enthralled the audience, why this mystery in the title of the thread?

You can adapt the o...ld style of titles to books and cinema, for instance. "Shaolin Master at Chithirai" or The Great Feat of a Concert by Abhishek! Give the young man credit in the header!

Good to hear about the concert :)

Abhishek would be merely be following in the footsteps of the great Bodhidharma - founder of the Shaolin temple - who was reputed to be a Pallava prince!

Sachi,
In all the fireworks, I missed that. Will do! A good appetizer it will be before I hear Abhishek during the season :)

Thanks, Sachi. I really appreciate the clip!
Just started listening to the neraval on madhurApuri nilayE.

First time listening to Vijay Natesan. Very strong ring to the kuchi sound! I believe he is TVG's student?

Sachi
I will listen to this recording possibly during the weekend . Not much time during weekdays. O gosh Abhishek has sung neravals in madhu mada mOdita hridayE sadayE too , now it is in the more popular line madhurapuri nilayE mani valayE - I wish the weekend arrives more sooner till then i will hum a third neraval
ayyo weekend vara layE innum ket kalayE . You seem to add so much of color, splash with your writing to few younger talented musicians - thank you for recording and sharing , i hope it has come out well.

Rsachi. I heard the concert and have recorded it. (I have got FM in my mobile. I connected that to my PC and recorded it). The concert was excellent as I have seen in his many concerts. He is the monarch of imagination and spirited delivery. The one song ran for 40 minutes. then thani and one thillana. He has given us PK unlimited utilising the full slot for his creativity. That is Abhishek.

I very much appreciate and enjoy your colourful postings - your creativity is a good match for Abhishek's creativity.

I listened this morning after the lovely post by sachi , but it was not in the zone of excellence of abhishek that I was expecting . I have heard far better poorvikalyani of abhi than this one . But I liked the kamas thillana a lot , incidentally I think i have only heard when lalgudi siblings played this thillana in violin , almost forgot the vocal version of lalgudi sir thillana.
