Music Academy has got a more trendy look and the corridors are more resembling a multiplex . Certainly with that renovation , the minimal ticket rates have been hiked from Rs 125 to Rs 150 - I prefer no more renovation till the economy improves.

I went to hear this vidwan sreevalsan whom i missed last year when i took off for few days in last season - a quality vidwan with only one quality concert in the most quality conscious sabha. I knew i will get ticket for sure as the previous concert was by vidushi sowmya .Fans of sowmya would have spared atleast one priced ticket for the evening II slot ,I went 5 t0 10 mins late after buying their souvenir which I am glad that they have not jacked up the price and stays at Rs 50.

Sreevalsan started as i entered with the bahudari krithi , his voice has immense sowkhyam and he has a consistent shruthi adherence , what else you need other than that. His bahudari was well done with a neraval in a rare line karunakara shree vasudeva and he was in the zone of excellence with a sprinkle of swaras appended by sreevalsan . I surely enjoyed bahudari.

Arabi raga alapana was bit too measured and the rare krithi shree saraswatati was delivered quite well with just a sprinkle of swaras , felt he could have gone more. The dhenuka filler teliyaleru was just there not that he did not sing well , but just giving only krithi did not satisfy me. kamas as a submain was lovely measured alapana ,neraval and swaras with sadguru krithi sujana jeevana was so much filled with shruthi and sowkhyam and i liked it completely. Time constraint was in his mind and he started the magnum opus subbaraya sastri in manasija and wrapped up with janani ninuvina and his reetigowlai muse was restricted because of his own planned restriction.

I have heard him two occasions and I have observed he has a special liking to pancharathna krithi to be sung at sabhas rather before doordarshan camera in tiruvayaru . He surprised by taking varali pancharathna as a main. Felt the choice was very good with his enunciation ,the neraval was just there overall not much dwelling there He did not bring a vistaramAna main status. Swaras in varali was well done but i felt he could have taken a varali with more sangathis in neraval and swaras.

THe RTP was too short and he sang it for just 23 minutes . Immensely liked his short alapana and taanam . Pallavi and swaras were bit of touch and go and they did not give me the same pep as R and T. The reason of why he did not sing raga maliga was perhaps that he wanted to showcase his trump card . He announced that he is singing a kathakali padam and thank god he also announed it was navaroz , otherwise i would have never known if it was shenjuruTTi or navaroz. The kathakali padam was lovely , his voice was brimming with visual feel as though i am in alapuzzha backwater and it was a fitting finish. The last jaya jaya rAmachandra janaki was just run up and down , when he started it was 09:13 and the time to close was 09:15 pm . i did not note the raga as i did not identify the raga .He wrapped sharp at 09:15pm.

The violinist HK venkatram is based out of Bangalore . I think I am hearing him for the first time . He gave a lovely support no show off at all and he was anusaranai at its best. He indeed pepped up with his kamas being the best. Both the percussionist had a controlled aggression. Ramesh could have taken a bit of pause for few krithis or portions of krithis but that did not happen.Amrit fingers was just fantastic and his rolling fingers were very comparable to the legend harishankar. Amrit was far better than the last time when I heard him in bangalore .

I think if either the tani was reduced by 5 or 10 minutes(from 20 minutes) or if Sreevalsan had dropped out one number say a dhenuka or reetigowlai and apportioned that time to kedaragowlai pallavi , the concert could have been a significantly more satisfying one. It is not that the team could not zone to excellence but that exact 2 and half hours planning is key to this premier sabha.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 and half hours.
