MSG FOREVER- Tribute concert by SANCARA on 2nd Jan 2015
Concert Details
Violin: Dr.M.Narmadha and Aishu Venkataraman (MSG and TNK schools in concert)
Mridangam: Dr. Vinod Venkatraman
Ghatam: Tripunithara Radhakrishnan
Date&Time: 2nd January, 2015, 06:00 PM
Venue: Corner Stone, Besant Avenue Road, Karpagam Garden,Adyar,Chennai
Chief Guest: Shri VV Sundaram
Guest of Honor: Shri Shekar Viswanathan
Attended the violin concert hosted by SANCARA. Second such experience for a rasika like me to witness the MSG Parur style and TNK styles in a single concert. The first concert in presence of the Trimurthy's of Violin by their daughter(s) was breath-taking.
This concert provided glimpses of both the styles in terms of rendering of ragas, swarams, thaanams.
Aishu (Aishwarya) mentioned during the concert that they had sat together for a week or so to prepare for this concert. However as a listener, it seemed that it was not just a week's effort of coordination but much more than that.
It was soothing to hear the words of Dr. Vinod Venkatraman about his daughter's voyage in the world of music and how a Guru shapes up the student. The commitment, devotion and dedication in his words about his daughter gave a very positive feeling to the rasikas and violin students who were witnessing the concert.
There were many take-aways in the concert in terms of technical aspects. How to play swarams in SAMAM which was demonstrated superbly by both the artistes in their characteristic banis, to cite one example. On a lighter note Dr.M.Narmadha remarked that "idathakku vassikkkarathu or idathey pidichakarathu thaan tendency and is easy but samam vassikarathu is very tough as per her grandather parur sundaram iyerji" She quipped that TNK mama had played a lot for Sri.Madurai Mani Iyer and Sri.Madurai Mani Iyer was a specialist in singing sarvalagu and rendering in samam."
It was also refreshing to hear from Madam Narmadha "the one and only unparalleled Nalinakanthi of MSG Guruji".
There was the touch of Indian-ness and the message to the world that heart and soul is in INDIA always when vaishnav janatho and a quick phrase on saare jahaan se acha was brought by young Aishwarya.
Thaniaavarthanam was very pleasant though a bit brief.
Summary: Pleasant experience and was expecting more than 2 hours of concert.

A remarkable concert.
First remark: Although many of us are aware of Aishu's large store of talent, she is very young ...and Narmadha (although certainly not old!) is an established giant in the music world. It is amazing that Narmada welcomed the youngster; it is amazing that the youngster had the confidence to play with Narmadha.
Second remark: They, together, had a wonderful sound.
Third remark: every piece, both solos and duets, was a real pleasure to listen to.
It was a lovely concert. The small venue, and Narmadha's welcome and opening speech made it feel more like a house concert ...in fact, more like a family event.

I attended this prog. It was raining honey from two different schools of playing violin. By learning vocal music & widening her repertoire, Aishu will definitely become an outstanding violinist in Carnatic Music as well.

No idea if they do other concerts in this place which bills itself as a banqueting hall --- but the sound and the sound guy were amazingly good.
Another remark: Thanks again to Narmadha for a really nice evening

Very happy to read about this concert!
I also heard that there was an event organized at Sastry Hall today called "Violin Vaibhavam" featuring young violinists from all major Carnatic schools.
It is wonderful to see such wonderful events come together. My sincere congratulations to Dr. MN and Dr. Aishu (yes!) for the success of this concert.

Sancara concert remembering Violinist MSGopalakrishnan was very good.
I noted many fantastic points on this concert.
Like her father Dr.Narmadha came up with this revolutionary idea of bringing two wonderful violin Schools together in a tribute event..Yes..she needs to be congratulated on her magnanimity.
The main piece was Mohanam which was featured as a RTP with just svarams.Razakhani was what Dr.Narmadha had said..please let me know if it was this same word.
After Aishwarya's Bilahari it was praiseworthy how Narmadha brought in the Mohanam Ragam fragrance. This was commendable.
At every point in the concert Dr.Narmadha gave clear proof of her absolute mastery and command over the violin. In fact I must express that her bowing is very melodic and she showers BLISS on the audience.
Her short educative intro preceding every item displays her deep knowledge and the abundant reservoir of talent and simplicity that Dr.Narmadha is.
Aishwarya is fully committed to her instrument. But as a listener I felt that her creative skills have to go up.Karnatak Music is very demanding and all round ability alone can leave a mark on the mind of the listener.
Dr.Narmadha skillfully lead the concert with her million dollar smile right from the Nattaikurinji Varnam in single string up to Madurai Mani Iyer English notes.
The highlight of the Sancara concert was Dr.Narmadha's Nalinakanthi.
I almost broke into tears after this soulful rendition. She mentioned about a wonderful comment on this song.
Shri Madurai Mani Iyer,Yehudi Menuhin and Abdul Karim Khan ;All these three great artists had mentioned about the one and only legendary MSGopalakrishnan's rendition of Manaviyala in Nalinakanti. This was an interesting piece of information.
Cleveland VVSundaram and SanDiego Shekar Viswanadan were special invitees and they were honored by Dr.Narmadha at the beginning of the event.
Dr.Narmadha presented interesting Taanams supported by Dr.Vinod and Radhakrishnan in the mridangam and Ghatam. What a full house it was.Nice to see that many youngsters attended the concert.
Thankyou Dr.Narmada for this nice event .
