Ramakrishnan Murthy - Sydney

Post by HarishankarK »

Ramakrishnan Murthy gave a pure classical spellbinding, outstanding concert today (August 9th 2015) here in Sydney.
Venue - Red Gum Centre Wentworthville.
Violin - Rajeev Mukundan
Mridangam - N C Bharadwaj
Concert started 4:15pm ended 8:15pm

Shlokam - Sadguru Gajaasya - Reetigowlai Varnam - Vanajaaksha - Ata Taala
Amma Raavamma - Kalyani, Tyagaraja. Neraval, Swaram @ TaamaraSadalanetru
Entha Veduko - Saraswathi Manohari, Tyagaraja, - Sung in a medium kalapramanam i/o usual fast speed. This was pick of the concert for me. Excellent, bhava filled rendition.
Dhanyasi Alaap - Minalochana Brova - Syama Sastri, Swaram @ Pallavi. Swarams were very good sung in slow and medium speed with full bhava.
Devagandhari sketch - Enneramum - GKB
Sri Maanini Manohara - Poornashadjam, Tyagaraja @ Swarams at pallavi. Very nice swarams.
Kaamboji Alapanai - Sri Subramanyaaya Namaste - MD - Aaalpa excellent particularly in kizh sthaayi. Song sung with full clarity in lyrics. Neraval @ Vaasa Vaadi and Swarams. Tani.
Maa Ramanan - Hindolam - PS
RTP - Varali - Misra Chapu tala - Kaana Kidaikkumo Sabesan Darisanam, Kandaal Kali Teerume. Tanam in Varali, Bahudari, Atana, Darbari Kanada, Neelambari, Surutti and Varali again. Swarams in Behag, Abhogi, Jonpuri (GKB composition ragams) and reverse order back to Varali. I don't think Trikaalam was done.
Eppo Varuvaaro - Jonpuri, GKB
Slokam - Kasturi Tilakam - Sindhu Bhairavi, Pilu, Mayamalavagowlai, Senchurutti - Ninyako Ninna Dhanyako Ranga - Ragamalika (Senchurutti, Nadanamakriya, Kurunji, Kapi, Yamunakalyani, Sindu Bhairavi).
Andrivvulagam Alandaai - Sindu Bhairavi - Tiruppavai - Andal
Ramachandraya Janaka - Bhadrachala Ramadasa - Mangalam - Kurunji
Mangalam Kosalendraaya - Kurunji, ManiRangu, Sri.
Excellent concert, very moving Enta Veduko and Kamboji. He was ready to sing for some more time when someone from backstage told him to close.
Violin supported well and played excellently. But the power of Ramakrishnan Murthy overshadowed both mridangam and violin. Mridangam was very good as well Tani was good. I feel that if there is a upa-pakkavaadyam along with mridangam then concert is better and tani more interesting.

Thanks to Pallavi who organised the concert very well. They have been organising concerts since last 20 years. Doing really great service to Carnatic Music here in Australia.
All rasikas were given a small snack packet as well (groundnut pakoda and badusha sweet).

Thanks for the review HariShankarK. It was a brilliant concert full of weighty classical music. A lovely concert list heavily featuring compositions of the trinity.

RKM's music has so much maturity that he is able to bring out so much bhavam in his alapanas and kriti renditions. Rajeev also played very well and his alapana in kambhoji was lovely. NC Bharadwaj is a gifted mrudangam player and his tani clearly bore the Umayalpuram Sivaraman stamp!

I didn't want to end the concert but had to ask him to finish up since we had to vacate the auditorium. Didn't expect him to sing 4 hour.

You did the right thing Mr. Mohan. No offence intended in my statement. Was greedy of me to want to listen to more even after he had sung for 4 hours.
Couldn't help it but. The music was Simply Sublime !

RKM has a lot of promise, and takes up challenging ragas such as Dhanyasi for RTP. I also feel he is trying to be KVN-esque - which is high praise. That said, more often than not I see that his voice is strained. Too many performances than he should be giving? How was his voice?

STRAINED, noticably in the upper registers. Your advice is apt, hope it reaches him. He is so good that one feels anxious for him.
