Having generated lot of anticipation and confidence about this young star through the concert in Nageswaran Sir’s house, I got another opportunity to savour his youthful energy filled yet sampradayamana concert in the KGS. Sandeep is definitely pushing the bar in each concert. Sandeep appears to have internalized Sanjay's many musical elements which is a sure prescription for success and wide appeal. He has left the facial contortions of his Guru for good. He has a pleasant voice which has a lot of strength and energy to showcase his ideas. He has got a very good repertoire and strives to present a couple of rarely heard songs in his concerts which is also a contributing factor for the wide appeal of his concerts. The swaras for Paripalayamam had some interesting kanakku swaras. The Malavi composition of Walajapet Venkatramana Bhagavatar was new to me. It has the same gait as that of the famous Thyagaraja composition- Nenarunchinanu- with an attractive chittaswaram. The raga swaroopam was in tact in the opening phrase itself.
The highlight of Sandeep's concert under review was an in depth exposition of two grand ragas - Shanmugapriya and Kambhoji. The alapana of SP was excellent with characteristic pidis ornamented with necessary jarus, glides and brighas contributing to the high aesthetic appeal, the sruti bhedam to Vasantha being the icing on the cake. But the sruti bhedam was a tad lengthy. The alapana consumed a solid 15 minutes but never sagging for a minute. The Gopalakrishna Bharathi composition is also a very rare song. I have heard it once from TNS. The elaborate neraval at the charanam line Bhakthi panni paadi Balakrishnan potrum was a testimony to his manodharmam. A cascade of cracker swaras in second kalam added lustre to the entire presentation.
Kambodi alapana was mostly in the madhya sthayi and tara sthayi in tune with the song that was to follow. The alapana took 10 minutes and the song Maragatavallim was neatly presented and decorated with sumptous swaras and the song took 30 minutes. The ragamalika comprised of Maund, Durbari Kanada, Karnataka Devagandhari and one more ragam. The lilting thillana by Tanjore S Kalyanaraman rounded off the concert.
The accompanists embellished the concert significantly. Mysore Srikanth’s violin was superb. The thani by Murugabhoopathy and Chandrasekar Sharma elicited appreciation from the discerning audience. Thyagaraja found a slot only in the Pavamana. A song of T in the first half surely enhances the weight of the concert. Sandeep should keep this in the back of his mind.
An excellent concert for two hours. But why KGS should restrict the duration of the concert I am not able to understand. The concert ended at 8.15 PM. It could have been easily upto 8.45 PM. The rasikas are the losers.
