The occasion was Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan's 10th rememberance day

$ does this fit the need for a kAsu there - kutriyalugaram or kutriyaligaram?

One can easily visualise mami seated on stage and presenting her songs to perfection. Must have been a great experience. Tamil seyyuL is also great (yours, sankark ?)

It was a very beautiful concert.

I met a non-Indian lady from France (she was sitting in the front row) who was Smt Vedavalli's student in 1980-something, and now teaches vocal and veena in Paris.

yes. A great nereval inspired it :)

Hemalatha - yet another under appreciated violinist? Me thinks she did great, especially her anandabhairavi swaram & pantuvarali nereval replies.

I know we were both looking forward to this concert. I found myself wondering if, after so many months, I had not built up an unreasonable expectation this time --- but, somehow, Smt Vedavalli exceeds any expectations every time.

I don't know if Hemalatha is under-appreciated? I certainly think she deserves more appreciation in the form of solo performances --- but solo chances for violinists are too few for the number of of excellent players that we have.

The opening varnam is so beautiful. It has Guha Dasa mudra - Is is RamaSwami Sivan's composition? Did he compose in Telugu as well?

This concert is an example on how to sing swarams for Ananda Bhairavi. The enjoyment and camaraderie between Vedavalli amma and Ms. Hemalatha is so infectious. Delightful music.

I found Hemalatha not only adept with melody but also layam. she is quick to pounce on anything that the vocalist throws. I guess to be widely accepted and appreciated one should play for a variety of artists. Most of time she accompanies Mambalam sisters and that might be one of the reasons. Otherwise she is a top violinist and quite underrate compared to the akkarais of the world

(Hari)Sankark/Nick- Fortunate indeed you are u to have been sprinkled with that pixie dust which this grand lady does every time to produce that ethereal effect :-). I have always wondered what attracts me to her music No great sAreeram, no svara pyrotechnics nor does she have an MSS esque tonality at this age and yet she weaves magic and sweeps one off their feet with her sheer .........vidvat ??

The varnam in question 'pankajAkshi nIpai' is attributed to Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer with its beautiful svaraksharas in its sahitya ( in many places it gently meanders along and then there will be jumps/bends/twists ) .I do remember reading somewhere that it was co-production along with his brother Ramasvami Sivan- who perhaps supplied the sahitya and sivanvAl ( Maha) set it to music. There is a commercial recording of the same by the late Smt Suguna Purushothaman worth listening. And may be Smt RV too had recorded and released it as a part of her 'abhyAsa gAnam' ? To check.

Watch her enjoying, appreciating and understanding thanis too: I suspect that she is capable of pouncing on anything a mridangist might throw!

She is not that under-rated: she gets quite a few accompanying spots outside of the family, and is one of the handful of violinists that get solo concerts, albeit only one or two or three a year --- but how many violinists get more than that? Violin solos are sadly rare.

Her music is undeniably wonderful, but it goes beyond music: her concerts sing to the heart and the soul. You may say, as I have often said, that all music worth listening to has a spiritual aspect. True, but, for me, at least, Smt Vedavalli's concerts are absolutely at the top in that aspect. Perhaps even more remarkable is that I find not only the beautiful musicality but also the spiritual content in the performances of many of her students, hence my attachment to the entire school.

Smt. Vedavalli belongs to the class of MS and DKP, whose excellence is a mark of total personality. Their music is an expression of that magnetic personality. Their soul is in communion with ours when they sing or talk. I like Smt. RV's talk also as at the beginning of this concert. It is all so gentle, to the point and form the heart. One's life gets meaning when one gets in contact with such persons, in an otherwise mad world as the unfortunate reading of newspapers in the morning suggests to us.

Hemalatha underrated? I don't think so... I rate her very highly (not that my rating counts). She does accompany a bunch of senior vidwans and vidushis including Vijay Siva, TMK etc... Also, please don't start comparisons - Akkarai - the elder - can hold her own for sure.

BTW - I am *jealous* :) of all the folks in Madras who can attend such concerts, and I intend to donate to Parivadini for making this available.
