HNB Sir,

I am giving the summary, in brief, as below:

The program notification and invitation was received well with registration numbering more than a hundred and the venue had to be changed to DOMS-001 to accommodate the confirmed participants. The lecture theater was full on Sunday, 30th of August, 2015 for the Lecture & Demonstration, gladdening the team and great maestro Prof. Akella garu.

The program commenced with invocation by the students of Vana Vani School, IITM and welcome address by Prof.V.Kamakoti, President, IITM, Music Club and introduction by IITM, music club member secretary.

The program was presented by Akella garu with the assistance of Vid.J.S.Eswara Prasad, Principal and managing trustee of Swara Bhangima School of music, Secunderabad for translation of telugu parts of lecture in to Tamizh and English. With brief introduction to 'AMS EASY METHODS', the demonstration of students learning under this system was done. First demonstration on tala and laya was by Ms.Keertana, aged 9; Second demonstration was by Ms.Padmaja, aged 13, on varnam, raga alapana-Karaharapriya, 'Prakkana Nilabadi' Keertana by Thyagraja and svarakalpana. Padmaja achieved the demonstrated levels of skills within a period of 18 months devoting only 2 hours per day. Padmaja also demonstrated the notation with Akella's gamakams signs for a mukthayi in Todi Varna. Students of Smt.Umamaheshwari, music teacher and disciple of Akella garu demonstrated on alankaras, jathis and gitas. The demonstrations established that AMS Easy Methods is a fast track innovative self learning system with guidance and mentoring role only by music teacher with aids of metronome and casio music instruments for tala and sruti/svara respectively in achieving the proficiency and confidence in handling tough laya aspects like trisram and chaturasram. Select audio and video samples of two students demonstrating the raga alapana and svarakalpana skills-Chi.J.Sriram was presented and audience were informed that both the students are performing concerts learning the keertanams on self learning with minimal guidance and mentoring by Akella garu.

Akella garu's lecture with constraint of time allocated, detailed on the need, reason and logic of the system and methods, innovation conforming to sampradaya teaching curricula with selected, restricted but immensely supporting the learning in tala, sruti, alankaras, svarajathis, gitas, varnams, keertanams and svarakalpana. He emphasized that student must give a minimum of four hours practice to gain the knowledge and skills for performance within a period of three years. On request and prompting from me, Akellaji elaborated on Kalpita, Kalpana, Kampita and Gamkam aspects in detail. Specially invited eminent guest of honor Sri R.Suryaprakash briefly joined the deliberations on the challenges for learning the allied ragas and welcomed initiatives for supporting the learning with innovative easy methods like AMS Easy Methods.

Lively question and answer session followed at the end of the lecture. Important questions were on 1. Why decry the sampradaya system in teaching when many a great vidwans and vidushees successfully learnt and practiced?; 2. How does this system support the manodharma learning?; Does a quick learning system and method enable perfection in tala and laya with popular understanding that only long period of practice enables perfection ?
Answers and explanations were given by Akella garu, Sri J.S.E Garu and by Sri S.Madhva Muni Rao (yours truly).

Specially invited eminent guest of honor Great Genius and Great Maestro Chitraveena Ravikiran conveyed his appreciation for such programs and initiatives by the team of event managers.

Sri Sridharan Sankaran, Managing Trustee and Event management team member offered vote of thanks ending the program. He also informed that with request from Principal, Vana Vani School, IITM, work shops and introduction of music curricula based on AMS EASY METHODS for the teaching at the VVS will be planned in the near future.

Thank you Sri Muniraoji.Looks better number than Bangalore.Hope AMS easy methods will be adopted by teachers.sampradaya system cannot be decried as it has produced great number of performing artists. But due to the present fast pace of life,AMS easy methods should be encouraged.

Think of music as an evolving craft just like any other discipline -- all other fields are evolving and music is no exception. Now when I learnt music in the beginning, I was clueless for many years that there was actually a system that could teach and improve your rhythmic skills, or the ability to break an activity like music into it's separate components and work on strengthening each one of them. The lack of rhythmic understanding was a big big dent in my confidence level as a kid and I know that if I had understood the basics of rhythm in this manner then the scenario would have been very different.

Also thanks to much misinformation on the subject, I did not realize that for a long time "research" was probably the most accurate translation of the word manodharma than anything else and there is a way to approach every aspect of it - alapana, tanam, neraval, kalpanaswara.

For eg. For a long time as a kid, I was aware that just like the verses in the upper octave, there were ones for the lower too (my teacher had taught me), but they are not always taught -- which is why you see a lot of kids not having a strong lower octave. The most common cause is that the base sa is too low which means your upper octave comes too easy, but at the lack of range in the lower notes.

Regarding the gamaka - once you can read the flow of the moving pitch, you can very well master any phrase by being able to hear it. An invaluable help for many people like me.

There are many other areas where one can be inspired from this to create their own efficient methods -- tanam, bowing, developing flexibility and strength of the fingers and muscles, fitness (the next big thing for musicians is going to be fitness), brigha construction, a proper approach to healthy voice production as per the anatomy of the body, languages, memorization and grasping and above all some way to render the tala on the feet where the violinist like the vocalist can free himself from bothering about where he is in the tala (and also so that he is not made to suffer on the stage). I have experimented with some of my ideas and I am very pleased so far with how it is going for me (despite very little time to even practice). I am taking this system and applying it to my feet.

Above all, one day the student should develop the capacity to learn by oneself. Now this in my opinion is the one single biggest reason why kids drop their interest in CM as they grow older (not to mention competition from other music genres, but still, I see that not many have the self interest to learn with self initiative). This will greatly improve the self interest and confidence of the student to keep learning as they grow older and circumstances change.

In Adhyatmika-vidya the efficient Guru shapes the aspirant. But, in Laukika-vidyas, the teacher’s role becomes minimum and the aspirant’s abilities only make him shine well. If the sampradaya system in archery is so great it would certainly have produced great number of archers like Ashwatthama, Ekalavya and Arjuna. But, as archery is a Laukika-vidya, irrespective of the teachings of the Dronacharya the Great, the intelligent ones only shone basing upon their individual abilities. As music also is a Laukika-vidya the intelligent aspirants only shone well.

But, unfortunately, some people think that the sampradaya system in teaching our music has produced great number of performing artists. Umpteen times it has very well been proved that the sampradaya system is full of illogicalities and when all these illogicalities have ably been removed the present novel method of learning our music came into light helping the aspirants work independently from the first day of the music-lesson and making the process very strictly ‘time-bound and result-oriented’ unlike in the past. But, as this quickened process incurs huge financial loss to the teachers, none of them is ready to come out to discuss the matters even keeping the high interests of our own kids. That is why the teachers’ attendance to these Lec-dems is very minimal and honest teachers only have attended and responded well. But, as the aspirants and their parents are naturally interested in this quickened process of learning music they are attending in maximum numbers.

Each and every word of our brother-member, SrinathK, is absolutely right. As he rightly writes the level of self-confidence instilled into the kid with the help of the various rhythmical exercises play the vital role in this novel system of learning our music independently. amsharma

Vidya, aloukika or loukika, is acquisition of basic knowledge of the established both personally and impersonally. Acquired knowledge creates desire for realization and attainment. Guru or a role model/achiever inspires and attracts the attention and desire to be put on correct path for realization and attainment. Goal setting, system, methods, skills in the practice learnt directly or indirectly from a Guru, who enlightens results in higher learning, committed and dedicated higher levels of practice. Strength of kalpita knowledge only (being the strong foundation) enables and empowers (the edifice, super form and structure) the kalpana. The practitioner in unity of kalpita and kalpana knowledge thinks and acts.
Teacher in aloukika vidya also advises the student to use the knowledge imparted and learnt for his own higher achievement and self fulfillment, spiritually. Teacher in loukika vidya also similarly advises the student. Weakness of lack of strong will, varying degrees of knowledge, lack of support system results in loss of confidence and awareness. With realization, student seeks guidance and mentoring by the teacher with desire to overcome the weaknesses.
Exceptionally talented, committed and dedicated student excels and receives the recognition much faster in any system of teaching, with adequate or even minimal role of the teacher. Popularity of such student also brings the teacher in to limelight and popularity.
Real challenge is for meeting the requirement of students not endowed with exceptional talent but interested and serious minded. It is also not having the benefit of the support systems in existence. Sampradaya system of teaching in Karnataka Music demands total commitment and dedication of the student with adequate support system. Other genre of music does not make such demand and attracts all the students who are not meeting the exacting standards of the sampradaya system. The student is inspired by the success of practitioners of other genre of music by their popularity as well as their standards of living and well being. The student is insecure when considering the option of Karnataka Sangeetha practicing, as it supports only the popular practitioners. The decline in rasikatva of Karnataka Music is the result of such state of affair.

In the interest of Karnataka Sangeetha as an art form for its growth and development during the current period of high potentiality and possibility of Global reach; better support system for learning and practice must dedicate the focus, attention and actions for reaching out to large population of not exceptionally talented youth and to win them over. In my observation, understanding and insights, two Great Maestros and living legends with proven results and success are Sangeetha Kala Acharyas Prof. Chitraveena Narasimhan and Prof.Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma. Their innovative systems and methods in teaching are strictly based on the sampradaya but unique. Unique in the sense, it brings total attention and commitment of the student, instills the self confidence, motivates for higher learning at any stage of active life. The anxiety and fear factor replaced with playfulness imaginatively. Between the two systems, in my opinion, Sri Narasimhan Sir's system is better suited to students with more than average inherent talent, while Sri Akella Sir's system is better suited to students with minimal natural talent in tala and svara cognition and reproduction.

The present time needs the highest levels of utilization of their guidance, coaching and mentoring adopted to mass education. Mass education will only result in critical mass appreciation of classical music-Karnataka Sangeetham, as it is based on the lakshya and lakshana aspects. All of us who are really interested and committed for the growth and development of one of the greatest of art forms in music, Karnataka Sangetham must work together, turning selfless. Not taking resort to para mata khandana to establish one's own mata, the way the established religion and its practices work. While the Academic and institutional teaching system continue with refinements, training of teachers and guides belonging to CN and AMS systems and outreach program through lecture & Demonstrations, workshops and performances of learnt students must be planned and executed by the event managers and foundations/institutions, both Public and Private. To achieve fast track results, it has to become mass supported and mass movement.

Very first action of all those interested and serious minded in this movement is to commit their time in attending such events and programs. Turning dedicated, extend higher level interest, commitment in parting with their resources to the proven event managers and organizers. With gained confidence of total blessings and support of Sri Chitraveena Narasimhan, Sri Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma; the dynamism of Sri Chitraveena Ravikiran, Sri T.M.Krishna, Sri Anil Srinivasan, Sri Vijaysiva, Sri Neyveli Santana Gopalan, Sri Sanjay Subramanyan, Sri Shankar Mahadevan, Smt.Bombay Jayashri,Smt. S.Sowmya; voluntary services of Maestro practitioners (like Sri R.Suryaprakash, who has pledged his support personally to me for any initiative), Can rasikas.org members come together and set an example for all the others, globally ?

Action plan has to conduct open house meeting for ideas and action plan with the participation of Sri Chitraveena Narasimhan Sir, Sri Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma Sir; all the maestros identified above; all the maestro practitioners committing voluntary services; event managers with the leadership of Sri Chitraveena Ravikiran and his chosen team.

Now, Please commit your pledges of support for the first action plan program.

December season in chennai will be better.but this program is day long which means some programs have to be missed.any way this mainly depends upon the availability of eminent vidwans listed by you.he amount need not be fixed.Even more Rasikas contributing Rs1000/- would be considerable. As you did earlier, whether some sponsorship is possible may be explored.Hope Rasikas will respond.

HNB Sir,

Sri Sridharan Sankaran, Managing Trustee, Ganapriya Foundation, our fellow member realized the potential of 'AMS EASY METHODS' and also secured the support of Prof.V.Kamakoti, President, IITM-Music Club and extended together the support for the L&D, which was very well received. Good things happen and if the cause is noble, support will come with spark of inspiration resulting in commitment. To catch the imagination, Celebrity or Popular artists acceptance and endorsement is a must. With many practitioners as our forumites, if they join the cause in full numbers, the rest of the decisions and actions will naturally follow in full flow.
It is suspenseful and anxious period in expectation for the turn of the moment. It is worth waiting for patiently, sense of mind in engagement and in creativity of selling the concept and the proposal. Curator and Event manager must have 'A' plan and 'B' plan to achieve the goal and objective.
