Guess the violinist - part 4

Post by srikant1987 »

Continuing Bilahari's series ...

Guess the violinists in the following tracks:

#10 - https://soundcloud.com/user-122040965/number10
#11 - https://soundcloud.com/user-122040965/number11
#12 - https://soundcloud.com/user-122040965/number12

To provide a varied listening experience, this part has a violin alapanai from a vocal concert, swarams from a violin solo concert, and neraval-swara shared with the vocalist.

Note that I may be repeating violinists from previous parts of the series or even within a part to prevent it becoming too easy through elimination. :D

Any other guesses? If you don't want to reveal your guesses, just post a note here once you've made up your mind ... would like a few participants before I give out the answers ... :)

#11 Useni is RK Shriramkumar
#12 Swarams in Saveri sound like TNK (with GNB)
#10 Sankarabharanam I am going to take a radical guess that it is R. Hemalata

#10: Vid A Kanyakumari, it's a concert with MLV. I cannot identify this myself, but it is not placable with certainty in the Lalgudi, Parur, Papa/Tripunithura or M Chandrasekaran style. Given that it is the pre-electric AK, one can recognize snatches of MC: the s p (lower pa) and p s, sdp near 2:11, the r,s around 2:36. They have taken more from the Lalgudi bani since, and the playing of many of her students (who use accoustic violins) would resembles the Lalgudi style more.

#11: It is indeed RKSK. The krti pADam (even in the little bit) gives away that it's not TNK: the ndnp is played replaced with dsnd (the ni having a split-fingering), and the pndp has a split-fingering trick in TNK version, as does the sns in sns pdp. The finale is also a little unlike TNK, who would typically play a conventional tadiginatom round, a bunch of triplets (as done in the sAvEri), or (typically in duos or trios) Chembai-like s,rr r,gg g,mm ... etc. The tone is not as sharp and bright as TNK: the GNB accompaniment tone is so much sharper even at the lower shruti. TNK would ordinarily also not have a plain pndns: the nis would have a brisk kampitam. You'd usually also get a r(g)r s(r)s ndp or a p(n)p m(p)m grs somewhere.

Bonus question: Can anyone recognize the mridangam? It doesn't seem to be KAP. It wasn't listed.

#12: This is TNK. It wasn't listed with the recording, but it's quite clear. Like Papa, he too doesn't completely "switch off" when the vocalist sings neravals and swarams, although the playing doesn't disturb their singing.

So there was no repitition here ;)

@srikanth1987 This was a great exercise. Glad to score 66.66%.

#10 was indeed tough.

I thought it might be worth explaining why I said Hemalatha for that one. As you said, the school itself is not uniquely stamped. So I could make out the female sounding voice from one Ummm. The sruti was E (not very high for a female artiste). From there I made an assumption that it was a more recent recording (which was my downfall). And looking at senior lady vocalists currently singing at or around E I felt someone like Vedavalli amma might be a good guess. Looking at her regular accompanists today, this clip was clearly not RKSK. Hemalatha is someone who accompanies her often. Also, she has touches of various schools in elements of raga playing but not a distinct stamp of any of the schools you mentioned. Ergo my choice....

@ Varsha it was great to see my guru's name quoted for #11 but it is certainly not him.. :)

rasaali, Please also tell us what led you to correctly guess RKSK & TNK. I've given some description, but it'll be so educative to hear it from all those attempting these (and scoring so well too!)
