Interesting that neither Smt. Charumati Ramachandran or Smt. Sudha Raghunthan is featured!

TMK majorly botched the RTP that day. He took up a rettai nadai pallavi in chatusra jjhampa tala that was sung by MLV and ironically ended up showing us what a great artiste she must have been!

He also ended up forgetting the words for Venlkatachala Vaibhavam getting by with a little help from arun prakash, sang Maand twice in successive songs.

Looks to this rasika like TMK is slacking off some...

What is a rettai nadai pallavi, is that sung in chatursra & thisra/kandam?

A rettai nadai pallavi is usually one where one part of the pallavi is in one nadai and the other part is in another nadai.

Malladi Brothers - Vasanthapriya Trust, 1st July.
with V Sanjeev, Mannargudi Eswaran, Karthick

(partial list)

Viriboni - Bhairavi varnam
LambhOdara mavalam te (?) - Harikambhoji - neraval & swaram @ surabhUsura samsEvita
Karunasamudra - Devagandhari (R)
Samayamu telisi - Asaveri
Kamalambham bhajare - Kalyani (R,N,S,T)
Balasubrahmanyam bajeham - Suruti
RTP in Todi - 'Brahmaivaham kila - Satguru kripaya'

Overall, an ordinary concert by their standards. Kalyani was stale. Highlight for me was the Devagandhari alapana.

Neyveli Santhanagopalan - 3/7/2007
Violinist??
Guruvayoor Dorai
SV Ramani

The main items were as follows. Apologies for the holes in my reporting:

Vathapi Ganapathim - Hamsadhwani - Adi - MD (S)
Nadalolodai - Kalyanavasantha - Rupakam - T (RNS)
Saraguna Palimpa - Kedaragowla - Adi - Poonchi Iyengar (RNST)
Orajoopu - Kannada Gowla - Adi - T (Brief outline)
Adi thala Tamil krithi in Purvikalyani (RS)

In view of the newly acquired membership of the artist on this forum, I had better not risk any further "aravekkadu" comments! Suffice it to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the concert even though it was rather warm - Kalyanavasantha in particular was a revelation. Perhaps Sri Santhanagopalan could himself give us his insights.

On a side note, it is interesting that TMK attempted a rettai nadai Pallavi. I haven't heard him elaborate Latangi before either. Suresh, what exactly went wrong in the Pallavi? Laya slips or overall presentation?

vijay... as I remember the pallavi used tisra nadai for the 1st part (the laghu) and khanda nadai for the 2nd half (anu + dhrutam). While singing in double speed, he overshot the runaway :) and kept going in khanda nadai. Of course with much aplomb he pulled it off without interruption so it was not noticed except may be by people who were keeping time. He offered the accompanist, Amritha Murali, the oipportunity to attempt the same which she promptly turned down :) and they moved on to the ragamalika part of the RTP.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an "expert", and most of what I have learnt is by listening. And I don't mean to belittle the expertise and talent of the artistes themselves. So please don't take this as anything more than personal observation and opinion.

Why don't you request Gayathri Girish or Pantula Rama next time they visit your area? In my recent memory, not too many artistes have the inclination to take up a tough challenge like this.

Next time I should be more careful when hearing Kambhoji and Harikambhoji.
I thought I could distinguish :)

The kRti is composed in kAmbOdhi only by MV. There are no pAThAntaras to it. So, singing in harikAmbOdhi is extremely unlikely, and if it was, that is wrong.
