Dr. Kashyap Mahesh is a much talented musician who is undergoing advance training from TVG. He is settled in Trichy and that may be one reason for his not being much visible in Chennai kutchery circuit. Endowed with a pleasing voice capable of traversing three octaves with ease, sruti sudham, abundant manodharmam, large repertoire- all qualities make his concerts very much appealing to the listeners. His concert in Vani Mahal earned him appreciation of the large audience.

Mahesh started with the celebrated varnam of Dr.BMK and it was very much appropriate considering that the next day is his Birthday. His raga alapana of Sreeranjani and the following kriti Marubalga, brought memoirs of Doyen Semmangudi who presented this song in his inimitable style in numerous concerts. But Marubalga is very rarely figuring in today’s concert fare. He did full justice to the song and presented the cascade of sangathis in a disciplined manner.

The alapana of Lathangi and Khamas were on the characteristic lines bringing out the raga swaroopam very eloquently with the choicest phrases. The song Venkataramana of Papanasam Sivan was topped with neraval on the lines Alarmel mangai manala and abundant swaras revealed his laya prowess. Brocheva for the main song is a rare choice and Mahesh handled it with aplomb. It was GNB who first sang this as main song in a radio concert. The composition of Maharajauram Santhanam in Hindolam had gone into oblivion since his departure and it was a nice gesture that Mahesh revived it. He made full justice to the song.

Pappu Gyan Dev- disciple of Dr. Pantula Rama, gave good following on the Violin and his raga alapanas and swara returns were appropriate. The strings of the violin gave way three times and he overcame the nervousness and followed with ease. Tirucherai Kaushik – disciple of Mannargudi Easwaran was lively with the right volume, deft strokes, anticipation and understanding. The thani with Sunil Kumar was very energetic and earned repeated applause from the audience.

An excellent concert for two hours.
