A perfect start to the concert with the bhairavi varnam, sung in two speeds.

3. candram bhaja mAnasa – asAvEri – catusra maTya – Muthuswamy Dikshithar

Beautiful alapanas by Shashikiran and Raghvendra Rao, with Shashikiran touching the mandra stAyi shadjam with such ease that it drew immediate applause from the audience.

A very nice alapana by Ganesh, followed by a moving rendition of the kriti.

The alapana in the mandra and Madhya stAyis was done by Shashikiran while Ganesh elaborated the ragam in the tAra stAyi. Neraval and swarams were at the anupallavi ‘cAla bahu vidhamugA ninu sadA vEDukonaDina endEla’. Neraval was done in catusra naDai, tisra naDai and half Avartanam in catusra naDai and the other half in tisra naDai. Swarams were sung in catusra naDai and tisra naDai. Ganesh did shruthi bedham during the kalpana swarams with Ri and Ma to produce hindOLam and shuddha sAvEri.

On the whole, it was two and a half hours of classical music at its sublime best. The percussionists did a great job throughout the concert.
