Usually December kutcheri seasons have two big footfall days of two Saturday and Sundays . Some times the holiday of Dec 25 if it falls not on a Saturday or Sunday is also a big footfall day. Mambalam the 2nd popular cluster of Chennai Sabhas that competes with mylapore has a range of sabhas too. It is not so sad that Indian Fine Arts moved from German Hall to Alwarpet as they are still functioning . It is very sad that the Chennai or Nungambakkam cultural academy has ceased to exist since the main Patron Lion S Natarajan passed on . This year it is very sad also to see mudhra not functioning in sabhas. Hope mudhra comes back in 2023 as a live concert sabha and not a webcast sabha .Personally if a Sabha ceases to exist it is to me like a temple or a school building razed .
Vani Mahal on a Saturday was competing with NGS combo of Trichur and Abhishek I skipped that as I felt let me hear more . I thought I should go to vijaysiva at Parthaswami sabha to not just hear vijaysiva but also to hear the legendary Trichy Sankaran . If I recall right that day there was also Ramana Balachander I want to try him. But finally due to family time and travel just left at 06 15 Pm thinking I can make it to vanimahal before 06 30 . The ticket line was there and the disbursement was not fast , lost atleast one or two songs . I think I heard some strains of Arabi with Durga Lakshmi then again I had to walk out for some time . As I settled back the natakapriya was also getting to closure . So much natak that I lost the precious carnatic music which is my favourite Priyam for me
Kannada was a slow krithi with a detailed alapana by a less restrained elder sister Ranjani. Ranjani sometimes has an excessive not fully opened throat but she did well with Kannada . Usually the more expressive younger sister will bail out but with shree mathrubhutam it was a well rounded rendition with even swaras where Ranjani took a lot of share. Of late I am comparing Gayatri to Maharajapuram Santhanam and Ranjani to Maharajapuram Ramachandran . Santhanam used to take a lot of strategic time out rests and when he comes he comes with booming sunaadam . Gayatri is bit like that for sure . I am big fan of atleast 3 hours concerts , I am glad Vanimahal took up as one evening concert that way main, rtp and megaragamaliga viruththam are all there.
Bhairavi is perhaps my favourite big 6 . Every krithi in Bhairavi especially the joy of hearing trinity is so deeply classical to me . The alapana was a clinical precision treatment . The mid to lower octave akka Ranjani setup a base with not much brigas with well polished non brigaish sangathis . The younger Thangai Gayatri soared with lovely brigas and I really liked her Bhairavi detail. The kithi I was thinking it may be upacharamoolanu or tanayuni or enati palamu , I was more thinking upachaaramoolanu as my first choice , but enati palamu was the song taken . Gayatri who took considerable rest with a nice violin return really took most of the charge in the main. The neraval was very detailed and the swaras could have been more but still great.
The filler in malayamarutham in karpaga Manohar was a fractured filler only krithi. With two singing I felt why can’t they take up swaras also fast filler should have swara Kalpana . may be longer swara pattens takes lot of energy and may affect the RTP, possibly they consciously decided to skip .
What a joy it was to hear the RTP in sunaadavinodhini . You have the darbar and Nayaki where the later is slightly thinner . Similarly you have the hamsanandi and sunaadavinodhini the later has a slightly thinner shade than the former . The ideas were distilled with such perfection. Ranjani built the base but the soaring Gayatri built a lovely edifice layering with so much of musical aura . Taanam was quite detailed , just may be they could have gone bit more , The Pallavi line was fantasic , I see some one by name Vinay varanasi is some one who collaborates with Raga sisters or who may have written this Pallavi, could that be the sisters with their Appa . I would love to know the author of the Pallavi . The Pallavi was for surely Pallavi sake nice trikaalam and the swaras in salagabhairavi and a bit later in dhenuka was well done . One can say their paramaguru SSI of padavini and teliyaleru Rama swara parts was imported so well by the sisters..
The viruththam was on lord Muruga . Khamas with saveri to follow was a normal viruththam course , the madhuvanti as a stop gap closure was rare and it well done . I was thinking the genius s Kalyanaraman and with that thought in my head , kanda naal mudhalai just came in as a madhuvanti joy to end the ragamaliga . I am not a fan of most of the abhangs ,this abhang was too much of Radha Kalyana utsavam .
Charumathi Raghuram was exceptional in the sunaadavinodhini cluster . Her bowing has TNK power and also a bit of sunaatdam like MSG especially in sunaadavinodhini. In Bhairavi few brigas she could not come that aesthetic in melody but overall her play and pass was really superb. One can easily mistake the aural sound that said Giridhar generates to Patri Satish Kumar , He had an arsenal of right valantai fingering technique and it indeed came out well . Anirudh sound was not perfect but he did embellish well for most part . Tani avarthanam was a fingering demonstration especially for sai Giridhar.. The sound adjustments for vocal and violin was perfect but for percussion could have been bit better especially upapakkavadhyam.

I sat in m or n row in the centre but bit left side of the hall, The sound adjustments in vanimahal was not even for many years but it looks they have fixed it . I wish they find quicker ways to disburse tickets for those who come 10 mins before. Also the lighting is even and they have kept the advertisements and banner in a right shade . Kudos to mambalam leading sabha ,

As I walked out few rows in front of me there were lot of folks taking selfies . I noticed it was our once writer Abhishek from Toronto , the student of Raji Gopalakrishnan and of late Ranjani Gayatri . You all may recollect one review of Mahavishnu about abhishek concert . Abby as he is known is popular for his other genre music and I just said hi to him for a few seconds , I am assuming he will read this review and i would like to know if he is singing a proper kutcheri concert this december.
GLICSPAWES 2022 "Goto LIve Concert Show PAtronage Without Excuses Series" concert #7 of 12 is done.
Overall an excellent concert for 3 hours, may be I missed 20 critical mins , could have been excellent to outstanding
