Why certain thillanas are not being Sung?
I don't know if anyone has ever already wondered that while some thillanas are widely sung and popular , some are not.
Especially all that of lalgudi are masterpieces. But, no one sings except a few.
I have never heard anyone sing the kapi , which is the most hummable and earworm thillana for me ever.
Even with my poor throat and some off keys, it sounds good and such is the composition.
How would it sound in the hands of a mellifluous voices.

One reason! That is pure instrumental music, specifically for violin.
Instrumentalists may have story there!
You want to destroy that!
Even hamIR kalyaNi we don't hear much.

Lalgudi Jayaraman Sir thillana (also add few varnams)lyrics and notations are possibly only kept with in say Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Viji or may be few closely knit sishya parampara . So quite a lot do not yet have access to the lyrics/notations of LGJ creations, therefore the wider performers have not performed especially vocalists . This is just my 2 cents- cannot assert 100 percent

I have both the books of Lalgudi's compositions and I can share the notations if anyone is interested.

Makes sense. the lyrical part could be difficult and there comes ownership too?rajeshnat wrote: ↑27 Nov 2024, 15:01 Lalgudi Jayaraman Sir thillana (also add few varnams)lyrics and notations are possibly only kept with in say Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Viji or may be few closely knit sishya parampara . If my memory serves me right (ah! that not such a trustworthy thing at my young age), was the year 2019 in which Sanjay sang the rAgESri tillana at the Academy?? We did not attend the season that year, but it was on youtube some time after that. Is it still around?

There was a young singer from LGJ school who was in Ohio state and used to sing in our "music meets" and had sung varNams of LGJ. Around 2000 or so. He had a book. Somebody asked him for a copy of that, he said go buy it ( poi vaangu!)
So seems like it was in circulation, but cannot confirm if tillAnas had been published.

Where else could it be? Under the bridge and eventually over the tunnel shop! Royapetah Road? Behind the law books store!
Seems like Law and Music go together
Nice if somebody would do a bike Vlog on Carnatic central, both junctions covering a round up of all sabhas and the thiruvizha ambience.

Singing is not big deal. We have ears and hence can decipher the notes. But , could we fill in with our own lyrics? Release an audio? copyright issues? Do Carnatic songs hold that powerful importance in Copyright laws ever?
What if I sing "alaipaaryudhe kannaa" as "kalaivaaniyae neeye" or even more janaranjagamly 'thookkampochudhe maane"
Just wondering?

vaRNA meTTunu onnu veccurukALOnno? apDi ragasiyama engayAvatu pOTTU kiLaapi viTTOmna apDI kaatilE kiLambi tIyA , no virala poiKKum.
We have this concept called vaRNA meTTU utilized by some composers based on trinity settings. You can do something secretly and release it somewhere, a dance arangETram and it takes with the wind and spreads like fire - no - goes viral.
