I attended this concert..

1. Divakaratanujam - Yadukulakambodhi (S)
2. Sri gurunapalitho - Padi (S)
3. Narasimha agaccha - Mohanam (RS)
4. Soundararajam - Brindavanasaaranga (short sketch)
5. Sivakamipathim - Nattakurinji
6. Narmada Kaveri - Namadesi (S)
7. Veena pusthaka - Vegavahini
8. Thyagarajaya namaste - Begada (RS)
9. Kalavati kamalasana - Kalavati
10. Bhajare chita - Kalyani (main) (RNST???)
11. Nagagandhari raganuthe - Nagagandhari
12. Sri Venkata gireesam - Suruti
13. Sri Kamalambike Shive - Sri

The AlApanais of mOhanam and bEgaDa were done very beautifully. some of her gamakkams and glides very perfect, precise and very moving.. and both the AlApanais were done in a rather non-orthodox fashion...

Singing svarams in regular rAgams like mOhanam and bEgaDa and rare rAgams like pADi and nAmadEsi, were both handled with equal ease. She did bring out a lot of emotions with all the kritis and made the evening quite a soulful one, till the kalAvati piece.

However, as she began kalyANi... well, for me, listening to the 7th kalyani main in 9 concerts was too much to handle. I hence left the audi.

Hmm..Meena, let's call it a fateh-able decision. Interesting to note that the main was the same in both concerts. Poor Bharath seems to have been done in by the resurgence of Kalyani (in Season 2005, I did not hear a single alaapana in Kalyani in over 25 concerts!)...can anyone provide the structure of Padi/Namadesi...

MOhanam and Kalyani as mains seems slightly odd...

nAmadEsi is the 50th asampUrNa mELa kartA rAgam.
s r g m p d n s / s n d p m g r s

pADi is a janya of mALavagauLa. (15th mELam)
s r m p n s / s n p d p m r s (is the popularly used scale today)

Thanks BHarath, same as Namanarayani I suppose...never heard a rendition in this ragam! Surpising since it is not even a Vivadhi! Even its Suddha Madhyama cousin, Vakulabharanam is rare - a real pity since it is such a beautiful ragam

The sight of either Bharath or Sathej in a concert is a harbinger of kalyANi. Accompany any of them to concerts this season and you will get to hear 25 kalyANis, if not more, in as many concerts ;)

Just kidding :)

Somehow, Sowmya and Kalyani do not go well. Remember last year someone criticised Sowmya for her Kalyani in BVB, Mylapore. (Neelamiyum Sowmyavum-was the heading and this article was in Tamil). Even her Mohanam on that day was below par. The kriti was a strong one. Even TMK failed rendering this Kriti in one of his concerts
But NGS with its acoustics elevates even a mediocre concert in to an excellant one..

I don't understand the nuances as much as you all do but I did like her Nidhi Chala in one of her commercial albums.
