Is there anyone equal to him who is endowed with the beauty of cupid?[p]
Among the millions of admirers,he is tactful and valiant [c1]
He does not take back his words,he does not lift his gaze to any other girl [c2]
Oh!Aliveni,[girl with a long plait]if I play the veena and sing sweetly,he exclaims "shabhash'' [c3]
[ In the second carana,it can also mean "he does not say no when I say something.]
Further the word"vajir' means a minister and "hammir' is a fearless warrior.
Taking into consideration that this is a "Javali"I have written the meanings
as"tactful"[as a minister] and "valiant"[as a warrior]

I found this translation elsewhere. Lakshman sir has given only two caraNa. This version has a third one with the author's mudrA.

I also found this remark about second caraNam
Original words ali vENulella pADina = when all ladies sing.

dharaNilO rati delcu udAra
shrI dharmapurAdhipu dainaTTi mA

dharaNilO = on earth, rati delcu = (he who) causes (us) to succeed in passion, udAra = generous, shrI dharmapurAdhipu dainaTTi mA = our king of Dharmapuri, to him, who is equal? §

vajIru himIrE - it should refer to vazir (title) hamIr (name of that person).

I think that the reference to 'hammir" is to a valiant warror by name "Hammir'
who regained his lost kingdom with his tact and valour
In kannada the name "hammiri' is used to refer to a strong and independant lady

Hammir was the son of Ari Singh of Mewar. He reconquered Chitoor in Rajastan from the hands of Ala-din -khilji
and this conquest is chronicled in an inscription in the Ekalingji temple at Mewar.

Composer is Dharmapuri Subbarayar. Therefore, going by the context 'vazir', 'hamir' can in no way represent someone in Rajasthan.'vazir' is a tile of moghul period, much like 'tehsildar' etc.

Did Dr.Pinakapani garu discuss this in some book or article? Reason I ask is that it sounds very unsatisfactory, esp. in light of the last charanam where it is made clear that the "smara sundaraanguDu" is the king of Dharmapuri. Even grammatically this interpretation Pallavi line does not fit (unless perhaps the question is being asked of this Vazir Hamir .. as in "Among all the millions of people, is there any one the equal of the handsome one, O Vazir Hamir"?)

the reference of"vajIru hamIru " is to the "smara sundarAngudu'
These words are used to glorify the "smara sundarAngudu"
"vajiru hamiru" are not addressed.

I am sorry I cannot remember where I got it from. I have been searching the web for the last 3 years trying to get as many lyrics as possible for my song collection. Probably it is from here, posted by Shyama Priya:

http://www.hummaa.com/music/song/Smara+ ... di/1077674

Also, I found this new link by someone from Singapore - Anuja Varaprasad. It refers to her teacher Jeyanthi Subramiam teaching her to dance to this jAvali. The last caranam is there but the words are different. I am having doubts about the word 'rati' as given by me earlier; it seems 'ati' is more logical as seen in this post but the words are not clear and meaning is incomplete. The translation is by the dancer.

javali. ragam parasu, thalam adi.

2:11 AM

in a dance dance mood now.

went for a dance workshop some time back. it was amazing. jeyanthi subramiam is such a wonderful lady, and a great dancer. her expressions are just divine. it was a brilliant experience just learning one item from her. her style was different from what we were used to but it was a refreshing change. after learning the strict and rigid kalakshetra style, where much focus was on stiffness and 'only one right way' it was great to be exposed to a style which emphasized fluidity and abstractness. i realised that there is more than one way to do things, just depending on the type of item. i could just watch jeyathi teacher do bhavam. she doesn't emphasize on leg movements, and she does not insist that hands should be firm at all times, elbows CAN droop she says. we gave her this amazed look and she just laughed at us. =) and, she adds, your eyes don't have to follow your hands all the time. we were in disbelief - really? we thought. is this allowed? it was great fun too, and druti's mum gave us such good food. =)

we learnt this new item. a javali. nayaki: swadeenapathika. the who is satisfied with her lover, he does everything to please her, and she has got no complaints about him. she's happy and proud of him, and her good fortune in snaring such a guy. (we all wish we could be like that eh?)

smarasundar anguni sariya vare

my lord, who is as beautiful as the god of love himself. there is no one equal to him.
his face, as bright as the moon. look around you, do you see anyone as beautiful as him?
his eyes, as beautiful as lotus petals. tell me, have you seen anyone like him.
his eyebrows, arched like a bow. his lips, as red as coral.
surely, there is no one to equal him.

sarasa koti lola vaseeru hameere

among all these people, my lord is king.
he can win anyone in battle, he is capable of that.
the most intelligent of them all, my lord is!

aadina mataku adamu pallukade

whatever i say, my lord will never refuse me.
if i have no money, he will willingly give me whatever i need.
if i tell him to stay at home, no need to go out, he will listen without argument.
he'll lovingly put flowers for me in my hair.

chediya kanula jooda hare

and other women? never. he averts his glance when he sees other women. he only has eyes for me.
he covers his face and walks away even if he sees a beautiful woman.

veenula kimpuka veena vayunchi ali veni nepada sabhashin chune

when i play the veena, he genuinely appreciates my music, and praises me.
he has even given me a ring to express his love for my playing and singing!

dharanilo athi thel pagudharar shree dharma pura dheeshu daina

in the whole world, he's so wealthy and oh so kind.
he who lives in dharmapuri, helps anyone he can. isn't he generous?

oh it is so sweet to perform. she does it sooo wonderfully. =) such an inspiration she is to all of us.

wouldn't we all love to have a guy like that? hahaa it sounds soo much more poetic in telugu, as compared to how ive tried to justify the english translation.

had such a good time learning it. must do something like this again.

E-S ji,
thank you very much for the link and more.
The meaning you have pointed in your post[#8]
makes my post complete.

E_S - rati is correct - and rati-sukha is the phrase for sexual pleasure/intercourse etc, and very commonly used in jAvaLis. Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan explains it very well in her demostrations. I am not sure why the word was altered in the worshop in Singapore - one possible reason is that Smt. Jayanthi is from the Kalakshetra school and they may have modified rati to ati.

Cool, thanks rshankar.

aaaaabbbbb, no need for 'ji'. E_S would do :)
BTW, amir/emir means king in Arabic. The vowels are interchangeable in that language. For example antha or entha mean 'you'.
