Can anybody give me the details regarding the emergence of the concept of "AADHAARA SHADJA " in Carnatic music?

Ah.. simple question at first glance but quite a deep one. One may be tempted to give a simple answer but I have a feeling that the actual historical development of this is quite involved. I will let other knowledgeable people in the forum pitch in.
